Even though season thirty-seven of The Simpsons just finished airing, the show isn’t going anywhere! Starting today, The Simpsons: Extreme Makeover: Homer Edition is available on Disney+, bringing new episodes directly to streaming viewers. This latest release features creative and surprising versions of Homer Simpson, with one crossover in particular being truly unexpected. For this Extreme Makeover, The Simpsons has partnered with actual places to create a unique “couch gag” – a collaboration unlike anything we’ve seen before.
The Simpsons has partnered with Meow Wolf, an art and entertainment company famous for its immersive, large-scale installations around the US. These locations – found in New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado, and Texas, with a new one coming to Los Angeles soon – are designed like elaborate story worlds filled with incredible artwork. The show recently used this unique style for a special opening sequence. This collaboration includes a new “couch gag” and a special edition reimagining Homer Simpson in unexpected ways, even portraying him as a version of the Joker. The Simpsons’ Meow Wolf Experience
To celebrate this unique collaboration, Animation Magazine interviewed Meow Wolf co-founder Emily Montoya about bringing their style to Springfield. She said being involved with a show they all grew up loving was an incredible honor and unforgettable experience. The team at The Simpsons, led by Matt Selman, were wonderful partners, embracing their creative ideas and helping them refine the project. Montoya also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to feature a cameo inspired by artist Matt King’s signature rainbow wizard.
Matt Selman, the current showrunner for The Simpsons, shared how a recent couch gag was inspired by his admiration for Meow Wolf’s immersive art installations. He first discovered their work at Omega Mart in Las Vegas and later visited locations in Santa Fe and Denver. Selman wanted to bring that same creative energy to The Simpsons and described the collaboration with Meow Wolf as a dream come true – they were able to take the classic couch gag and make it wonderfully bizarre, surreal, and unique. He expressed his gratitude to all of the artists and craftspeople at Meow Wolf for creating such a joyful segment.
