5 Times Batman Used His Villains’ Powers

Batman is a famous superhero known for fighting alongside incredibly powerful heroes. Despite being surrounded by gods and goddesses, he stands out thanks to his skills, willpower, and intelligence. He consistently proves his worth, even when facing villains who are physically much stronger than him. Whether it’s Poison Ivy’s plant control or Bane’s enhanced strength, Batman often fights opponents with a clear physical advantage, yet he always finds a way to win.

Batman typically defeats his enemies by being smarter and more strategic, but occasionally he turns the tables by using their own tactics against them. Even a skilled hero like Batman can benefit from extra help, and surprisingly, that help has often come from the powers and technology of his villains. We’ll be exploring five instances where Batman borrowed from his rogues’ gallery – and how he utilized those borrowed abilities. Let’s dive in and talk about the Dark Knight!

5) Venom

The “Venom” storyline is a surprisingly great story in Batman’s history. After being unable to rescue a girl from drowning, Batman began using Venom, a drug that boosted his strength. He quickly became addicted, losing control and acting more like a criminal than a hero. The struggle to overcome this addiction was incredibly difficult for him, revealing a rare vulnerability. Interestingly, this story marked the first appearance of Venom – even before Bane! Later, Bane would use Venom to demonstrate he could conquer one of Batman’s weaknesses and surpass him, but he too ended up addicted.

4) The Man-Bat Serum

When Damian Wayne died, Batman became completely focused on defeating Talia and the Heretic, no matter the cost. To combat Talia’s forces of Man-Bat ninjas, Batman took a drastic step: he injected himself with the Man-Bat serum, transforming into a monstrous bat-like creature with control over a swarm of bats. As this winged creature, Batman led the bats in an attack, weakening Talia’s soldiers and then using his increased strength to fight the Heretic. Ultimately, it took the combined efforts of the entire Bat-Family to win, but seeing Batman actually become a bat was a uniquely memorable sight.

3) Yellow Lantern Ring

The Sinestro Corps recruits members who can instill fear – something Batman excels at. They initially tried to recruit him, but stopped when they learned he’d once been a Green Lantern. Later, during the “Forever Evil” story arc, Batman himself used a yellow ring to gain an advantage against the villain Power Ring. Ironically, Power Ring was selected for his own cowardice, making him particularly vulnerable facing Batman, who could weaponize fear – a skill amplified by Power Ring’s actions.

2) Bonded with Etrigan

As a huge Batman fan, I’ve always found his willingness to go to any length fascinating – and his team-ups are often where things get really interesting. Take Etrigan the Demon, for example. The guy is usually trying to incinerate everyone, but even he realized Superman had gone too far in the Injustice world. Batman was desperate enough to actually merge with Etrigan, sacrificing a piece of his own soul just to have a fighting chance against an all-powerful Superman and eventually put him into a magical sleep. It wasn’t a long partnership, but seeing Batman and Etrigan together was genuinely chilling. They were this incredible contrast – the grim, calculated Dark Knight paired with a chaotic, demonic force – a blend of fear and twisted justice that really worked.

1) Resurrected in the Lazarus Pit

For centuries, Ra’s al Ghul has used the Lazarus Pits to avoid death, repeatedly coming back from the brink. Batman, however, always considered these dangerous, unnatural pools to be something he’d never use. That changed after the events of “H2SH,” when he died. Talia, unwilling to lose him, brought Batman back to life using her own Lazarus Pit. While the full effects on his mind are still unknown, Talia noted he returned fundamentally changed – darker and different than before. He’s back, but it seems the experience may have cost him something vital.
