Elisha Cuthbert is back in the spotlight.
The star of Every Year After recently explained her decision to step away from acting for four years, before being cast in the new Prime Video series adapted from Carley Fortune’s bestselling books.
During a recent interview on Today, Hayley Cuthbert shared that balancing work with raising her first child was incredibly difficult. She worked throughout all four years of their early childhood, which she found challenging. When she and husband Dion Phaneuf had their second child, she decided to prioritize family time completely and step away from her job so she wouldn’t miss a moment.
The 43-year-old actor, who’s known for roles in movies like The Girl Next Door and Old School, and TV shows like 24 and Happy Endings, recently shared, “I just wanted to spend time at home with my kids, and I loved every moment of it.”
Now that her children, Zaphire (born in 2017) and Fable (born in 2022), are getting bigger, the Canadian actress is eager to start taking on new acting projects. Her husband is a retired hockey player.
She shared on Today that her children are now attending school full-time, which gives her the time, motivation, and emotional capacity to pursue her own goals.
Cuthbert returned to television after a four-year break, drawing on her own maternal side to play the mother of Sam (Matt Cornett) and Charlie (Michael Bradway) in Every Year After. You can currently stream the show on Prime Video.

She explained that joining the TV show led her to discover the books it was based on. Although she had the script while filming, she decided to read the original novel and quickly became a huge fan of the author, Carley.
“So,” Cuthbert continued, “I read all her books, they’re amazing. I recommend them.”
Cuthbert is happy to see Sadie Soverall, the lead actress in the series, becoming famous now, when the entertainment industry is more supportive of women.
Looking back on being a popular figure in the early 2000s, she said it was incredibly stressful. She feels Sadie Soverall is fortunate to be at a point in her career where she doesn’t have those same pressures – things are much easier for her now.
I’ve been following Cuthbert’s career for years, so I wasn’t totally surprised to hear he’s stepping back from Hollywood. It seems like more and more celebrities are realizing a quieter life is what they really want, and I’m fascinated to learn about those who’ve made that jump. I’m definitely curious to see who else has traded the glitz and glamour for something more peaceful!

I was absolutely devastated when I heard about Antonio Banderas’ heart attack back in 2019! Thankfully, he pulled through, and honestly, it’s been amazing to see him prioritize what he loves. He went back home to Málaga, Spain, and is throwing himself into theater – which, as a huge fan, is just perfect. It’s like he’s finally doing exactly what makes him happy, and I’m so thrilled for him!
“It really shifted my perspective on everything,” Antonio shared with The Times in March 2026. “Coming so close to death made me reflect on my life and understand that, at my core, I’m a theater actor.”
The actor, who was once nominated for a Tony Award and still appears in some movies and television shows, now owns a theater and actively participates in his community.
He went on to say he’d never felt happier. Staying connected to his community – his home, his neighbors, and the people he grew up with – meant everything to him. Over time, that bond hadn’t faded at all; in fact, it had grown stronger.

After 19 seasons, The Ellen DeGeneres Show ended in 2022 following accusations of a negative and harmful work environment. These claims led to an internal investigation, the firing of several executives, and widespread public criticism.
Ellen made a comeback with her last comedy special, called For Your Approval, which premiered on Netflix in September 2024. Before its release, she announced she was planning to retire from acting and entertainment.
During her recent stand-up tour, Ellen DeGeneres announced to the audience that she’s retiring after her upcoming Netflix special. According to SFGate, she stated, ‘This is the last time you’re going to see me.’
Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, have settled in the Cotswolds. Ellen shared with Richard Bacon in July 2025, during a conversation at the Everyman theater in Cheltenham, that they decided to remain there after Donald Trump was reelected in November 2024.
Honestly, the English countryside just took my breath away! I was hearing someone describe it to the BBC, and they were so right – we really don’t see landscapes like this very often. Everything feels so charming, from the little villages to the towns and all the buildings. It’s like stepping back in time to a much simpler, more peaceful way of life, and it’s absolutely gorgeous.
“It’s just a nicer place,” Ellen explained. “They treat animals well, and everyone is so friendly. We really love living here. We moved in November, which wasn’t the best timing, but I finally got to see snow! Portia brought her horses with her, I have chickens, and we even had sheep for a couple of weeks.”

Tyra Banks, the host of America’s Next Top Model, decided to move to Australia partly to focus on her ice cream company, SMiZE and Dream. She explained on Today with Jenna & Friends that her business had been supplying ice cream to places like airplanes and cruise ships, and she was frequently traveling to Australia where a large production facility was making her recipes. She grew to love the country with each visit.
Banks also recognized Australia as a promising market for her product, noting that it’s one of the top three countries in the world for ice cream consumption, alongside America and New Zealand.
She ultimately moved there with her son, York (whose father is her ex, Erik Asla), and her boyfriend, Louis Bélanger-Martin, saying Australia has been a wonderful experience for her and her family.

Eva Longoria, known for her role on Desperate Housewives, has moved from Los Angeles and now divides her time between Mexico and Spain with her husband, José Bastón, and their son, Santiago. She explained to Marie Claire that while she lived in Los Angeles her entire adult life, the city had changed, and the pandemic accelerated that shift. Issues like homelessness and high taxes also contributed to her decision, though she emphasized she doesn’t want to criticize California.
Longoria clarified to The View: Behind the Table that her move wasn’t politically motivated, despite speculation following the presidential election. She explained that work commitments, including filming Land of Women in Spain and Searching for Mexico, led to an extended stay abroad. She feels fortunate to be able to leave the US when many Americans can’t, and expresses anxiety and sadness for those who are stuck. Despite the move, Longoria remains active in her career, with recent roles in Only Murders in the Building and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Road Trip.

Actor Richard Gere has relocated from Chicago to Spain with his family. He explained on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that his wife, Alejandra Silva, who is from Galicia, encouraged the move, and they plan to live in Madrid for several years. Gere is thrilled about the opportunity for their young sons, Alexander and James, to thrive in a bilingual environment. He also has an adult son, Homer, with his former partner, Carey Lowell. The family seems to be enjoying the change, with Gere telling Elle España that they are happier than ever and are really embracing this new chapter in their lives.

Singer Christina Milian and her family have officially made Paris their home. Married to French singer Matt Pokora for over seven years, the couple previously spent six months of each year commuting between the U.S. and France. They decided to move permanently so their children – Violet (from a previous marriage to The-Dream), and sons Isaiah and Kenna (with Pokora) – could attend school in France.
Milian feels it’s a wonderful opportunity for her kids, who are now happily settled and fluent in French. She enjoys an active lifestyle with them during the day and works ahead of schedule at night, finding a healthy balance. She told TopMob in December 2024 that her kids are thriving in Paris, and she’s enjoying the experience as well.

Lindsay Lohan is frustrated by the ongoing speculation surrounding her decision to leave Los Angeles and decided to clarify the reasons behind it, reflecting on her busy career and social life in the early 2000s.
In a March 2024 interview with Bustle, she explained that she felt her work was often overshadowed by the constant attention of the paparazzi, which she found frustrating. She wished the focus had remained on her career and felt the media frenzy took on a life of its own, ultimately driving her desire to step away from the spotlight.
Lindsay relocated overseas, initially to London and then to Dubai, also venturing into opening beach clubs in Greece. However, a desire for a life outside the public eye was another key factor in her move.
Lindsay Lohan wondered if she’d ever find love, questioning if it would ever happen for her. She realized she needed to focus on herself before things could fall into place and she could embrace the opportunities she truly wanted.
She eventually found love with Bader Shammas, marrying him in 2022 and welcoming their son, Luai, in 2023.
Though they currently live in Dubai, Lindsay hasn’t left acting behind. She continues to appear in films like Our Little Secret, Irish Wish, and Freakier Friday.

Josh decided to leave Hollywood after some careful thought. He explained to People magazine in July 2024 that Hollywood isn’t just a location, but a way of life. He wanted to avoid being surrounded by people constantly focused on the film industry, fearing it would narrow his perspective. He longed for a life with more variety and opportunities for personal growth, calling that ‘the spice of life.’
Along with his wife, Tamsin Egerton, and their four children, Josh moved to the countryside of Hampshire, England. He told The Guardian in July 2024 that while time flies with a large family, moving allowed him to focus on what truly mattered. Despite the change, Josh has remained active in his career, appearing in films like Verity, Fight or Flight, and Trap.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m always fascinated by how people choose to live, and Jesse is a great example of someone prioritizing peace and normalcy. You might be surprised to learn he actually lives in Indiana, not Los Angeles! He shared with CBS News Sunday Morning that he’s been living there on and off for the last decade, and it just feels like home. He really values comfort and prefers to avoid the often-unstable world of the entertainment industry. It’s refreshing to hear! Despite being an Oscar nominee, Jesse lives a pretty grounded life with his wife, Anna Strout, and their son, Banner. He’s intentionally disconnected – he doesn’t use social media and isn’t constantly networking with industry folks. In fact, his son barely even watches movies! It’s a lovely way to keep things real and avoid getting caught up in the constant need to measure success within the industry. It seems like he’s truly built a life focused on what matters most to him.

Eliza, known for roles in shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the movie Bring It On, announced in September 2024 that she’s now certified in psychedelic-assisted therapy and is continuing her education to become a mental health professional.
Okay, seriously, hearing her talk about finally finding what she’s meant to do… it gives me chills! She basically said she was able to change things around in her life and focus on getting herself healthy, so she could then help other people. And she felt like she had to share how much everything changed for her – the peace she’s found, the passion! It’s just…it’s SO obvious that this is what she was born to do, you know? Her true calling. I knew it all along!

The actress best known for playing a character on The Flintstones shared that she relocated to Ireland in January 2025 with her son, Clay. She’s currently working to become an Irish citizen because her grandparents were from there. While she mentioned recent political events as a factor in her decision to move, she hasn’t ruled out the possibility of returning to her home country in the future.
In a TikTok video, she shared that she misses her children, friends, and the life she had back home. She’s currently working on building a new life in her current country, and says her family will think about returning to America when it’s a place where everyone has equal rights and feels safe.

Actress Evangeline Lilly, known for her role in Ant-Man and the Wasp, has said she’s stepping away from acting for an unspecified amount of time after two decades in the business.
In a June 2024 Instagram post, Evangeline shared how happy and at peace she feels while pursuing her dreams. She expressed gratitude for her good fortune, explaining that while choosing a path less traveled – prioritizing purpose over things like money and fame – can be daunting, it ultimately leads to a much more satisfying life.
Honestly, while I loved my time in Hollywood, right now I’m exactly where I need to be. Don’t completely count me out of returning someday though – you never know what the future holds!

Since finishing the Netflix series V-Wars in 2019, the actor best known for The Vampire Diaries hasn’t taken on a new acting role. He’s been focusing on a personal mission: fighting climate change by working to improve the health of the world’s soil.
It’s been a little over four years since I really focused on acting. I needed to prioritize my family – my wife, Nikki Reed, and our two kids – and build up some businesses I’m passionate about. Alongside that, I’ve been working hard to get these important films out into the world. I’m so proud of Kiss the Ground, which came out in 2020, and its sequel, Common Ground. Both films really highlight how crucial regenerative farming is for the future, and it’s been amazing to be a part of sharing that message.
Looking ahead, the actor said he envisions himself as a rancher, focused on building lasting brands – including his bourbon and health/wellness company. He’s deeply committed to sustainable farming and healthy soil, principles he and his family practice. He explained this is his long-term goal and the reason behind his passions, stating, ‘This is who I am and what I’m working towards.’

In a February 2021 episode of her podcast, Empty Inside, former iCarly star Jennette McCurdy shared with guest Anna Faris that she had stopped acting a few years prior. She’s now pursuing writing and directing opportunities, alongside hosting the podcast.
Jennette shared that she deeply regrets many of her past acting roles, detailing these feelings in her 2022 memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died. She expressed feeling resentful towards her career and unfulfilled by the parts she played, describing them as cheesy and embarrassing. Having worked on those shows from ages 13 to 21, she was already feeling ashamed by age 15, realizing her peers weren’t impressed by her television work.
She hasn’t ruled out returning to acting completely. In an interview with TopMob News in October 2022, she explained that writing her book helped her consider acting in a new light, free from past pressures. She believes she might be open to it again if she were to write a role specifically for herself – that could be the only way she’d consider it.

It seemed like a pretty easy decision. The chance to marry Prince Harry, focus on the charities we care about, and wear the Queen’s tiaras would make leaving Hollywood completely worthwhile.
Similar to Grace Kelly’s journey from Hollywood to Monaco, Meghan Markle transitioned from her acting career in Toronto – where she became known for her role in the TV show Suits – to a life within the British Royal Family. Now that she and Prince Harry have stepped down as senior royals and are living in Montecito, California, Meghan is returning to professional life, starting with a multi-year deal with Netflix.
She has already released the 2022 docuseries Harry & Meghan and is preparing a lifestyle show, With Love, Meghan, scheduled for 2025, both on Netflix. In addition, she’s launched a podcast and her lifestyle brand, As Ever.

After starring in over 40 films since she began her career with 1994’s The Mask, the actress really needed a rest when she finished filming Annie in 2014.
She told Gwyneth Paltrow that she realized she wanted a different lifestyle. After years of intense work and filmmaking, she felt burned out. She explained that making a movie is incredibly demanding – you’re committed for long hours every day for months, leaving no room for anything else in your life.
Cameron Diaz had many interests she wanted to pursue, including writing – she followed up her successful book, The Body Book, with The Longevity Book – and starting a family with her husband, Benji Madden. Although she told InStyle in 2019 that she didn’t miss acting and was focused on wellness, it seems she might be open to returning to performing at least one more time.
Jamie Foxx explained to TopMob News how they convinced Cameron Diaz to star in the 2025 Netflix movie Back in Action. He said they practically pleaded with her, getting down on their knees to ask her to do it. “We love her, and we’ve been waiting for her to do another film – this is going to be amazing!”

The actor stated firmly that he wouldn’t return to the show after completing his five years on Empire. When Extra asked Terrence Howard about his plans before the sixth and final season aired in 2019, he said he was finished with acting and no longer wanted to play roles.
Despite appearing in a few projects since then, the Academy Award nominee announced his intention to retire from acting again in 2022 while promoting his Peacock series, The Best Man: The Final Chapters. He explained to Entertainment Tonight that he felt he’d given his all as an actor and now wanted to focus on watching and enjoying new talent, rather than repeating past performances.
Even with those past issues, Howard has continued to act, appearing in shows like Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist and the Netflix film Shirley. He also has several new projects planned.

After his character, King Joffrey, died on the show in 2014, Jack Gleeson—who was 21 at the time—decided he wanted to quit acting. He’d been performing since he was eight years old and simply wasn’t enjoying it anymore.
Jack isn’t a child star anymore, and some of the excitement has faded. He explained that turning a hobby into a job changes things. “Before, it was just something fun to do with friends, or a summer pastime,” he said. “I still like it, but making a living from something alters how you feel about it. It’s not that I dislike it, it’s just not my career goal.”
I’ve been so thrilled to see Jack return to acting after a six-year hiatus! He really hit his stride again in 2020, landing a role on the BBC series Out of Her Mind. And it hasn’t stopped there – he’s kept busy with some fantastic projects including films like Rebecca’s Boyfriend and In the Land of Saints and Sinners, plus TV appearances in shows such as Safe Harbor and The Famous Five. It’s wonderful to see his talent shining again.

When Jennifer Aniston, known for her role in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, married actor Kevin Kline in 1989, they made a plan to balance their careers and family life. Kline explained to Playboy that they decided to alternate work schedules so they would always be available to care for their children, Owen and Greta, who is now a singer known as Frankie Cosmos.
He added that Phoebe consistently prioritizes staying home with her children when it’s her turn to work. While she had a small role in her friend Jennifer Jason Leigh’s 2001 film, The Anniversary Party, Cates primarily focuses on running her boutique, Blue Tree, in New York City.

During the peak of his popularity with movies like Ghostbusters and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, the actor paused his film career after his wife sadly died from breast cancer in 1991. He wanted to dedicate his time to raising their children, Rachel and Mitchell.
Despite not appearing in a live-action film since 1997 – he even turned down a small role in the 2016 Ghostbusters remake directed by Paul Feig – Rick remains incredibly popular, as demonstrated by the strong reaction to news of an assault on him in New York City in 2020. Fortunately for his fans, he’s returning to the screen in Disney’s upcoming reboot, Shrunk, alongside Josh Gad.

After marrying fashion designer Adam Kimmel in 2010, actress Drew Barrymore suggested she was considering stepping back from acting. She told Vogue that most roles require intimate scenes, which she wasn’t comfortable with. While confident in her relationship, she felt any challenging work needed to be truly exceptional to justify those kinds of demands.
After her son Martin was born in 2014, joining his sister Louisanna, she firmly decided to step away from acting. She told Us Weekly in 2016 that she felt like an outsider and was now focused solely on being a mother. She also mentioned supporting her husband Jimmy Kimmel’s work and pursuing painting as hobbies, explaining, “I think that’s mainly why I stopped [acting].”

She had starred in popular shows like Ally McBeal, Nip/Tuck, Arrested Development, and Scandal. After those roles, the Australian actress felt it might be time for a change.
Turning 45, I started thinking about trying something completely new and challenging,” she shared on her wife Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show in 2018. “I had a good idea of what my acting career would look like for the next decade or two, so I decided to leave it behind and start my own business.”
Her company, General Public, which creates art for everyone, was almost complete – she just needed to finish one final piece.
I spoke with Mitch Hurwitz, the creator of Arrested Development, and told him I wouldn’t participate in a fifth season because I had decided to stop acting. He was very understanding and supportive, and we had a good talk. Surprisingly, he ended up writing my character into five episodes.

It’s understandable why, after winning three Oscars, Daniel Day-Lewis might decide to retire from acting. Soon after receiving his sixth Academy Award nomination for his 2017 film, Phantom Thread, his representative announced he would be stepping away from the profession. The statement expressed his deep gratitude to colleagues and fans over the years, and clarified that this was a personal decision – one he and his team wouldn’t be discussing further.
Just as Daniel Day-Lewis had announced his retirement from acting, a new project drew him back in. In October 2024, Focus Features revealed he would star in Anemone, a film he co-wrote with his son, Ronan Day-Lewis, who will also be directing.

After becoming known for her role on Good Luck Charlie, she decided to focus on her education in 2018. She went on to earn both a master’s degree and a PhD from MIT, and also attended Harvard Law School.
On top of everything else, Bridgit started her own company called Northwood Space in February 2023. The startup is building ground stations to facilitate communication with satellites – sending and receiving data from space – and Bridgit became its CEO.
