As someone who loves action movies, I was really excited to jump back into the world of Gun Honey with this new series! Gun Honey: Doubles Down #1 throws Joanna Tan into her toughest mission yet, and it’s a blast watching her use all her skills to overcome it. The comic totally nails that classic, pulpy action feel – sometimes it leans into it a little hard, but honestly, it just makes the story even more engaging. It really pulls you in and leaves you wanting more from this electrifying adventure.
The comic series Gun Honey centers around smuggler Joanna Tan. While earlier issues focused on Joanna’s family and personal life, Gun Honey: Doubles Down shifts towards a more action-packed, spy-thriller style—similar to James Bond or Mission: Impossible, especially the film From Russia With Love. The story begins with some espionage, but really takes off with a thrilling escape sequence after a mission goes wrong. It’s all presented with a classic, pulp-adventure feel that genre fans will enjoy.

Gun Honey: Doubles Down Raises The Stakes With Three Targets and High Octane Action
One of the best things about Gun Honey: Doubles Down is its intriguing setup. Writer Charles Ardai puts Joanna, a highly skilled operative, in a tough spot: she has to redo a mission that failed for no reason of her own. The job is complicated by the fact that the target has two look-alikes, and no one knows which one is the real deal.
Setting the story across Russia adds another layer of complexity, making Joanna’s journey all the more impressive. She handles the mounting chaos with skill, especially when the carefully laid plans completely unravel. From that moment on, the story is a non-stop thrill ride, featuring a heart-stopping escape that feels straight out of a Mission: Impossible film – it’s so good, even Ethan Hunt would be envious.
Ang Hor Kheng and Asifur Rahman’s incredible work truly brings this story to life, and the action-packed finale – complete with a dramatic fall, a high-speed motorcycle chase, and a helicopter pursuit – promises a thrilling and captivating read.
Gun Honey: Doubles Down Could Reign In One Specific Element
Because Joanna’s work requires her to get physically close to people, the series naturally includes some intimate and suggestive scenes. These moments are often handled well, blending those elements with strong visuals, and Joanna herself looks fantastic throughout the issue.
That said, other scenarios push things into more gratuitous territory, and while one in particular does convey that nothing is off limits regarding Joanna completing a mission, it still feels unnecessary. A few tweaks to that scene and not only would the point still have landed, but we could have gotten to the amazing action sequence that follows even sooner. There are also several shots of Joanna early on that couldn’t help but take me out of the story and action at hand.
Even with its imperfections, I really had fun reading Gun Honey: Doubles Down, especially the exciting and well-done action scenes. The ending suggests things are going to get even faster and more intense, which is great! If you like stylish spy stories with a lot of classic action and thrills, Gun Honey: Doubles Down #1 is definitely worth checking out.
