A hugely popular fantasy series is now a big hit on streaming services. Its films have quickly become incredibly popular on Netflix in the United States.
Both Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief (from 2010) and its sequel, Sea of Monsters (2013), are performing very well on Netflix. According to FlixPatrol, Percy Jackson is currently the No. 3 most-watched movie in the U.S., with Sea of Monsters close behind at No. 4. This success happened quickly, as the films only arrived on Netflix yesterday and immediately landed in the platform’s Top 10.
The Percy Jackson Were Massive Disappointments
Okay, so the Percy Jackson movies are having a moment on Netflix, which is great to see. But let’s be real, they didn’t exactly land with a splash when they were first released. As a longtime fan of the books, I remember the uproar – fans were not happy with how much the movies deviated from the source material. And honestly, the critics weren’t thrilled either. Both films landed with pretty lukewarm scores on Rotten Tomatoes – around 48% and 43%, if I remember correctly. It’s interesting to see them finding a new audience now, though!
The Percy Jackson movies didn’t finish adapting all five books by Rick Riordan because both critics and fans were disappointed with them. The first movie, The Lightning Thief, earned $226 million worldwide, but the second, Sea of Monsters, made a little less—just over $200 million. Although neither film was a complete failure financially, it became obvious after the second one that people were losing interest. A third movie was never made, but the story continues in other forms.
The Percy Jackson & the Olympians Show Is Much Better Than the Movies
As a long-time fan of the Percy Jackson books, I was pretty hesitant after those first movie adaptations… let’s just say they didn’t quite capture the magic. But I’m thrilled to say the series that came out in 2023, with Walker Scobell as Percy, is a huge improvement! It’s been getting great reactions from both critics and fans like me, and honestly, it’s starting to make up for the letdown of the films. It feels much more true to the spirit of the books, and I’m really enjoying it.
The Disney+ series Percy Jackson & the Olympians has released two seasons, covering the stories of The Lightning Thief and Sea of Monsters. A third season is coming out later this year and will be the first time The Titan’s Curse is brought to life in a live-action show. Although the series hasn’t been officially renewed for a fourth season, most people believe it will continue long enough to adapt all five books by Rick Riordan.
The popular Percy Jackson book series continues to grow, with new books planned this year written by four different authors. Fans can also look forward to the final book in The Senior Year Chronicles, which will wrap up Percy Jackson’s story for now.
The Percy Jackson movies are available to stream on Netflix.
