Jack Whitehall believes his latest movie, Virginia Woolf’s Night and Day, will connect with viewers today. He’s shared his thoughts on why the film remains relevant for modern audiences.
The comedian joins Timothy Spall, Jennifer Saunders, and Lily Allen in the upcoming movie based on the author’s second book.
In a recent interview with TopMob, the actor shared that he hadn’t read the original book, but was immediately impressed by the script written by Justine Waddell.
I was immediately drawn in by the overall feel of it,” he explained. “It was genuinely heartfelt, and Justine created a brilliant script – funny, engaging, and with themes that resonate today. Ultimately, it’s just a very captivating story.”

Okay, so this movie centers around Katherine Hilbery – everyone calls her Kat – a really bright astronomer. It’s fascinating to watch her navigate a world that wasn’t exactly welcoming to women in science back then. Haley Bennett, who I’ve loved in things like Cyrano and The Last Frontier, absolutely shines in the lead role.
Bennet enjoyed Katherine’s strong independence and appreciated that the character didn’t focus on romantic relationships. She also felt the movie had a similar style to films made by directors like Greta Gerwig and John Hughes.
She also pointed out that the story focuses equally on themes of family, relationships, self-discovery, and belonging, not just romance.
I really enjoyed the warm and playful relationships within the Hilbery family, and how they beautifully brought to life the ideas Virginia Woolf presented.

Both Bennett and Whitehall also remarked how they hoped the film might prompt some audience members to read Woolf’s other works – pointing out that Night and Day could function as a “gateway Woolf.”
Bennett explained that the production is a funny, quirky, and heartwarming family story, which is quite different from Virginia Woolf’s usual writing. He hopes this approach will appeal to audiences who might not typically read her more challenging books.
Whitehall added that he was now personally keen to “mainline” the rest of the writer’s legendary canon, agreeing that “this is a good introduction.”
Virginia Woolf’s Night and Day is released in UK cinemas on Friday 19 June.
