Despite many good TV shows in the mid-2000s, Prison Break stands out as a truly iconic and much-loved crime drama. The show followed brothers Lincoln Burrows and Michael Scofield – with Lincoln facing a false death sentence – and Michael’s incredibly detailed plan to break him out of prison. It’s remained popular years after it first aired on Fox, leading to a new version coming to Hulu. However, this reboot will feature some significant differences from the original series.
I just read in Variety that the new Prison Break series on Hulu is going to be a lot grimmer and more intense than the original. Apparently, Lukas Gage, who’s playing a first-time congressional candidate in the show, let slip that they’re really leaning into a darker tone this time around.
Gage described the new series as intense, dark, and frightening. While honoring the original show, they’ve taken a fresh approach thanks to Elgin’s personal connection to the story and unique vision. They aren’t trying to simply replicate what made the original great, and moving to Hulu allows them to explore more mature and realistic themes.
Will It Really Be Prison Break If It’s Completely Different?
While a darker and more intense tone for the new Hulu version of Prison Break isn’t unexpected—streaming services often allow for more mature content than traditional television—the biggest change is the story itself. This isn’t a continuation of Michael Scofield’s adventures; it’s a completely new story with new characters, simply set within the same universe as the original series.
I’ve been hearing some people wonder if this new show will be anything like the original Prison Break. A big part of what made that series so good was the story of those brothers – Michael doing everything he could to save Lincoln – so I get why fans are a little worried. But honestly, I think this new show could still be really compelling. It stars Emily Browning as Cassidy Collins, a former soldier who becomes a corrections officer and takes a job at a seriously dangerous prison to prove how much she cares about someone. Along with Gage, the cast also includes Drake Rodger, Clayton Cardenas, JR Bourne, Georgie Flores, and Myles Bullock, so it sounds like a solid group!
The show’s creators might be smart to avoid simply retelling the original series and instead create a fresh, new direction for Cassidy’s character. While Prison Break was a huge success and still draws viewers today, it would be challenging to recreate something so well-loved.
