Wolverine is About to Have a Chilling Villain Turn (and It’s About Time)

In my opinion, despite all the heroic acts he’s performed, lives he’s saved, and disasters he’s helped avert, there’s no denying that Wolverine often appears as a villain in disguise. His darker side dominates, with rare moments of goodness making exceptions rather than the rule. Not everyone shares this viewpoint, but the latest revelations at San Diego Comic-Con 2025 suggest Marvel’s mutant universe creators do. They seem convinced that Wolverine’s darkness is genuine and it’s high time to remove any constraints, allowing him to fully embody his true self. Naturally, this isn’t great news for those who cross his path. Yet, for many fans, this portrayal of Wolverine has been a long-awaited development.

According to a recent post on the official Marvel website, an upcoming event in the X-Men series, titled “Age of Revelation,” will introduce a Sinister Six team. This story takes place 10 years into the future from current Marvel timeline. Unlike the original Sinister Six who were enemies of Spider-Man, this new group is orchestrated by Mister Sinister and consists of Havok, Black Cat, Domino, Omega Red, Fantomex, and Venom. They aim to acquire a piece of Revelation’s power, but first, they must defeat Wolverine to achieve their goal. However, the article suggests that Wolverine is not the hero he used to be anymore; instead, he has become an “Angel of Death,” enforcing Revelation’s oppressive rule over the land.

Wolverine Becomes the “Angel of Death”

If the narrative of “Age of Revelation” suggests a darker future where being called an “Angel of Death” signifies a turn towards villainy, then the concept of Wolverine switching sides becomes an intriguing plot development. This transformation wouldn’t have been quick or effortless. As demonstrated in “X-Men: Age of Revelation” #0 by Joel MacKay and Edgar Delgado, and “X-Men” (2024) #19 by Joel MacKay and Sean Parsons, Wolverine is initially on the side of Cyclops and others who stand against Revelation before its occurrence and immediately after. Therefore, a major event in the intervening years must have influenced Logan to align with Revelation instead.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that even though the Sinister Six are said to aim at acquiring some of Revelation’s power, this doesn’t necessarily imply they’re doing so for the greater good of the public. Instead, it seems more plausible that their intentions are guided by Sinister’s and their own questionable motives. In a scenario where everything appears rotten and corrupt, being an “Angel of Death” might turn out to be the most beneficial outcome.

A Dark Wolverine Might be the Ultimate Villain

Despite appearing as a hero in the Marvel Comics universe, Wolverine exhibits characteristics typically associated with villains. He is quick to anger, and when provoked, he resorts to violence swiftly. His behavior is erratic, often disregarding laws, rules, and regulations, and he harbors deep emotional turmoil that he refuses to confront, fueling his rage even more. Morally complex, he has no qualms about taking lives and displays no regret for the carnage he causes. Fortunately, within the Marvel Comics universe, he has found a way to direct his destructive instincts towards fighting for truth and justice, but he remains an inherently dangerous character.

If Marvel decides to delve deeper into Wolverine’s darker aspects, making him more like the “Angel of Death,” many fans would welcome this change. Heroes seldom get the opportunity to grapple with their inner demons, and when they do, it results in timeless stories. Given Wolverine’s extensive background in shady dealings, hidden corners, and seedy bars, there seems to be a rich reservoir of material just waiting to be brought to life on screen.

Making Wolverine Bad will be Good for Others

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but see the enticing allure in the twist of our beloved Wolverine turning to the dark side. It’s not just about the gripping storyline that such a transformation presents for the anti-hero himself; it also opens up a rich narrative landscape for other characters who must grapple with and be troubled by this “twisted” Wolverine.

For instance, imagine the captivating progression in the Cyclops-Wolverine relationship! In this new scenario, Cyclops could rally a band of rebels to challenge Revelations’ rule, while our once ally, Wolverine, serves as Revelations’ enforcer. Such a dynamic would undoubtedly breathe fresh life into their complex bond and keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

Moreover, delving into the reasons behind an evil Wolverine’s actions and choices ensures that the character remains intriguing and unpredictable – a quality that any great storyteller strives to maintain.

In a manner that aligns with the series’ brooding ambiance, transforming Wolverine into an antagonist encapsulates the bleak essence of a world dominated by a mutant wielding divine powers. This portrayal underscores the grim reality and high tension of a future where mutants and humans are at odds, with mutants themselves embroiled in internal conflict. It underscores how low society has sunk and how pervasive the influence of Revelation has become. It powerfully conveys the gravity of the Age of Revelation era. In essence, allowing Wolverine to embrace his villainous side might prove beneficial for fans.
