James Cameron has teased he might make an animated Avatar spin-off series or movie.
As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that I, being a 70-year-old director, am wrapping up the upcoming chapter of my beloved sci-fi saga – “Avatar: Fire and Ash.” But here’s something truly exciting! In an exclusive reveal, I’ve proposed a captivating animated spinoff series or film to Disney. Can’t wait to see where this creative journey takes us next!
In conversation with Empire, he clarified: “I proposed, ‘Here’s an idea: I want to create an animated series set within this universe, but stories that aren’t typical of it. There could potentially be an animated movie as well – perhaps for online streaming, or a theatrical release.’
The director behind “The Terminator” films mentioned that working on the “Avatar” project is similar to creating “The Animatrix,” an animated spin-off film from the “Matrix” series.
He mentioned: “An early excellent illustration is ‘The Animatrix’, in which they ventured beyond the world of the ‘Matrix’. These instances serve as wonderful examples of how we can enrich and ornament the universe of …
Cameron anticipates that the animated Avatar series will provide “background information about characters and additional events that occurred outside of the cameras’ view during the movies.
He added: “Who first landed on Pandora? The first expedition. You could go anywhere you want.”
Even so, the Titanic director admitted it was still early days for the project.
They mentioned that they haven’t delved deeply into it as of now. They are in the process of collecting their narratives, along with related tasks, and they are on a hunt for indie film directors and animators who are keen to participate.
Avatar: Fire and Ash” continues its story post-2022’s “The Way of Water,” focusing on Na’vi characters Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), along with their family, as they confront a fresh danger from the fire-wielding ‘Ash People’ tribe, led by Varang (Oona Chaplin). This new adversary sparks renewed conflict amidst the tumultuous landscape of Pandora.
The movie titled “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” set to release on December 19, 2025, will feature the comeback of Sigourney Weaver’s character Kiri and Kate Winslet’s character Ronal.
