Eyes of Wakanda Brings 11 Black Panther Characters To The MCU Timeline

Marvel Studios has brought forth several new characters connected to Black Panther in the animated series titled “Eyes of Wakanda“. This series, developed by Ryan Coogler and Todd Harris, is a four-part spinoff that delves into the past of the Wakandan War Dogs, previously known as the Hatut Zeraze. In this fictional African nation, the War Dogs serve as a secret police force, responsible for retrieving stolen Wakandan technology, such as vibranium weapons, across time and globally, long before T’Challa (played by Chadwick Boseman) made his debut in Captain America: Civil War.

Back in 2025, on August 1st, I was thrilled to binge-watch the entire four-episode run of “Eyes of Wakanda” on Disney+, adding another gem to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 6 collection. What made this animated series even more intriguing was its integration into Earth 616’s primary continuity, making the characters introduced in “Eyes of Wakanda” an essential part of the MCU’s rich history. A total of eleven new characters graced our screens in this series, although there were many others who left a lasting impression but might not reappear.

“Into the Lion’s Den” (Episode 1)

In the opening episode of “Eyes of Wakanda,” we were transported to the island of Crete during 1260 BC. Here, a former member of the Dora Milaje found herself facing off against a renegade Wakandan outcast, reminiscent of Killmonger, who aimed to seize control using his power and vibranium weapons to establish a worldwide empire under his dominion. The first episode, titled “Into the Lion’s Den,” introduced significant characters in Wakanda’s history and set the stage for the artifact-hunting narrative that unfolded across the subsequent episodes of this limited series, featuring an exceptional voice cast.

Winnie Harlow’s character, named Noni, was once expelled from the Dora Milaje and in 1260 BC, she embarks on a quest to recover stolen artifacts from Wakanda in ancient Crete. In her initial attempt, Noni fails to capture the Lion and secure the weapons, but she perseveres and assumes the role of a warrior dog to complete this mission. Following a time jump in episode 2 of “Eyes of Wakanda,” Noni becomes the leader of the War Dogs. In episode 2, the voice of Noni is provided by Lynn Whitfield.

Cress Williams’ Character – Originally recognized as Hatut Zeraze and a member of the Wakandan Royal Guard named Nkati, he adopted the identity of the Lion following his disillusionment with Wakanda’s cloaked secrecy and isolation from global affairs. He now heads the Lion Cult, which comprises a Viking woman, a Ronin swordsman, a Samoan warrior, and a Middle Eastern soldier, during their conquest of Crete.

In the fictional universe of Marvel Comics, a character known as Akeja was prominently featured as a Wakandan scientist under T’Challa’s rule. Similarly, in the series “Eyes of Wakanda,” Akeya holds the position of leader among the Dora Milaje. Initially, she exiled Noni, but then assigned her to confront the Lion, recognizing Noni’s inner War Dog spirit.

“Legends and Lies” (Episode 2)

The second installment of “Eyes of Wakanda” unfolds several years following the events of the first episode, allowing for Noni’s character to be portrayed as an older woman. A significant portion of the storyline revolves around a fictionalized depiction of the Trojan War, thereby introducing notable characters from Greek mythology. Notably, “Eyes of Wakanda” revises history by incorporating a Wakandan war dog into the conflict between Troy and Greece.

In the epic battle of the Trojan War, B’Kai, also known as Memnon (Larry Herron), collaborates with the Greeks, including Achilles, to discreetly penetrate a Trojan outpost in order to recover a stolen vibranium pendant. This covert operation creates tension between him and Achilles, who apparently bestowed upon him the moniker ‘Memnon’, possibly after the famous King Agamemnon.

Achilles – The renowned Greek warrior Achilles was the most celebrated hero of the Trojan War and commander of the Myrmidons. He battled alongside Patroclus and other Greek soldiers to penetrate Troy, but he experiences profound betrayal upon discovering his friend’s hidden objective, leading to his heel being wounded – an event that reshapes our understanding of history.

Odysseus – Known as the leader and monarch of the Greek forces in the Trojan War, Odysseus was a significant character in the conflict. However, unlike Achilles who desired to continue fighting, Odysseus yearned for withdrawal. Soon, Matt Damon will portray this legendary figure in Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation titled The Odyssey.

Two significant characters in Greek mythology are Paris from Troy and Helen. Paris, being a Trojan prince, elopes with Helen, which ignites the Trojan War. During this conflict, it’s Paris who inflicts the fatal wound on Achilles, not B’Kai. In the story “Eyes of Wakanda,” it is Helen who possesses the stolen vibranium pendant, and B’Kai lets them both escape after retrieving the necklace. King Priam, the father of Paris, also features in the narrative.

“Lost and Found” (Episode 3)

In the year 1400 AD, I find myself immersed in both China and Wakanda, as the third episode of “Eyes of Wakanda,” titled “Lost and Found,” unfolds. Unlike the first two tales, this installment introduces characters who were previously unseen. While it primarily revolves around Wakandan warriors, it also marks the arrival of a new Iron Fist within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This makes episode 3 a significant milestone in the MCU’s chronology, potentially paving the way for even more thrilling narratives down the line.

Jacques Coliman’s War Dog Character, Basha, – Famous and revered canine from Wakanda, Basha had a brief stint in China on a mission to retrieve a vibranium artifact fashioned as a dragon’s tongue for a holy statue. He strategically used Jorani to approach the vibranium, going so far as to engage in an intimate relationship with her before returning to Wakanda.

Ebo, also known as Isaac Robinson-Smith, holds the position of captain within the War Dogs and is superior to Basha. He’s a member of Wakanda’s Archive Security team, demonstrating exceptional fighting skills and an emphasis on order and rules. However, his rigid demeanor softens following Basha’s commendation to the High Council, which refers to him as ‘Bashenga Reborn,’ a title honoring Wakanda’s first Black Panther.

As a cinephile, I’d say: In the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Panther series, I, High Councillor Rakim (Gary Anthony Williams), am a newcomer with a title that echoes through Wakanda’s halls. Leading the War Dogs, I stand as a powerful and authoritative figure, ever-vigilant in my duty to shield our secret nation. My unwavering resolve to safeguard Wakanda, whatever it takes, is unyielding.

In the comic book “Eyes of Wakanda,” Jorani, known as the Iron Fist (originally called Jona Xiao), made his debut as the bearer of the Iron Fist title around 1400. In a fierce battle, he conquered the dragon Shou-Lao the Undying and drew power from its fiery heart, transforming into an unstoppable fighter. Danny Rand’s Iron Fist was portrayed by Finn Jones in the series “Iron Fist” and “The Defenders Saga,” while Colleen Wing also took on the mantle of the Iron Fist. Additionally, the animated series “What If…?” introduced Kwai Jun-Fan to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), who would later become the Iron Fist in the 1800s.

“The Last Panther” (Episode 4)

In the Battle of Adwa, Ethiopia, 1896, a seasoned Wakandan War Dog and his apprentice, who is also one of Wakanda’s princes, embark on a mission to recover a vibranium ax. In episode 4 of “Eyes of Wakanda,” titled “The Last Panther,” they encounter the Queen of Wakanda from the future, who doubles as the world’s last Black Panther. She advises them to return the ax, enabling Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) to claim it a century hence, thereby preventing an alien Horde invasion 500 years into the future.

Prince Tafari, known as Zeke Alton, is the lively third child of Wakanda’s royal family who is being groomed for a different role than ruling – that of a War Dog. Tafari is characterized by his honor, skill, wit, and playful mischief, reflecting his youthful exuberance as he strives to meet the high standards placed upon him. In a heartfelt plea, it’s his words that persuade Kuda to return the ax to its secret location, ensuring its continued concealment and safeguarding the future.

As a dedicated fan, I’d rephrase it like this:

I, or rather, Steve Toussaint’s character, Kuda, serves as the seasoned War Dog, guiding Tafari’s training in Ethiopia. Loyalty to my family and my nation is paramount, and so, I consent to returning the vibranium axe for the sake of their safety. Kuda is not only a friendly presence but also an exceptional warrior, making him the ideal mentor for the young prince.

In the distant future, Earth is attacked by an alien force called the Horde, causing widespread destruction and eliminating many of Earth’s heroes. With Wakanda as the last remaining stronghold, its future queen ingests a special herb that transforms her into the Black Panther. Utilizing advanced Quantum technology, she travels back in time to prevent this invasion. During her travels, she encounters Kuda and Prince Tafari and convinces them to return an ax they had found, which ultimately leads to Killmonger discovering it years later. This act connects Wakanda to the outside world and thwarts the Horde’s attack.

This threesome played a pivotal role in saving the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), making them some of its most crucial characters, yet their identities remain unknown to many. The series “Eyes of Wakanda” delved into four distinct time periods that were previously hidden from the MCU. Whether it will return for a second season or more stories is uncertain, but it would be captivating to delve deeper into the realm of Wakanda and the MCU’s timeline through the eyes of its extraordinary War Dog warriors.
