First Steps Replaces a Major Fantastic Four Character (& It’s for the Best)

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where high expectations come with the territory, the film “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” delivers all the signature elements of the original Marvel family. Reed Richards can’t resist the lure of his lab; Johnny Storm is a quick-tempered firestarter who acts before he thinks; Sue Storm serves as the peacemaker, and Victor Von Doom manages to insert himself into the storyline. The only character who deviates slightly from their comic book persona is Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), who embraces his rocky transformation throughout “First Steps“.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ben appears wiser than his age, comforting Reed that he holds no grudge about Reed’s absence during the cosmic rays incident on their initial space voyage. Although there might be several reasons for Ben’s optimistic demeanor, one significant factor is a positive development in his romantic life, as depicted in “First Steps.” Yet, while it’s heartening to observe Ben taking steps towards romance, the Marvel Cinematic Universe seems to be shifting its focus away from his primary interest.

Rachel Rozman Grabs The Thing’s Attention in Fantastic Four: First Steps

In the universe known as Earth-828, the Fantastic Four are highly appreciated for their past heroics. Before the story unfolds in “First Steps,” they successfully thwarted Mole Man’s plan to unleash Subterranea’s fury on the surface world, defeated Red Ghost and other villains of note. This earned them celebrity status, with people becoming fascinated about where they reside and the gender of Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman’s child. The team can hardly step foot in their old neighborhood without being the main attraction. Early into the movie, Ben Grimm (The Thing) pays a visit to Yancy Street, his childhood home, and puts on a display for some local children. Their teacher, Rachel Rozman (played by Natasha Lyonne), intervenes, indicating that Ben is always welcome to spend time with the kids. There’s an undercurrent of flirtation between them, but it takes a backseat once Silver Surfer (portrayed by Julia Garner) shows up and warns humanity about Galactus’ impending arrival.

In simpler terms, the Fantastic Four journey into space to face off against the Devourer of Worlds (Ralph Ineson). He demands Reed and Sue’s baby as a condition for sparing Earth, but they refuse. Upon their return, instead of the usual warm welcome, the world criticizes them for risking their lives. This leaves Ben in a tough spot. Before Galactus arrives, he sees Rachel again, who is happy to see him despite the situation. Although the movie “First Steps” doesn’t explicitly show them becoming a couple, it suggests that their relationship might develop further. If so, this could mean a significant Marvel character will be left without a seat when ‘musical chairs’ are played.

Alicia Masters Could Become More Than a Love Interest in the MCU

In the majority of Marvel productions, Ben Grimm (also known as The Thing) develops a romantic relationship with Alicia Masters, a talented yet sightless artist who appreciates more than just her partner’s rough exterior. This heartwarming bond from the comics is translated to live-action in Tim Story’s Fantastic Four film series. Kerry Washington portrays Alicia, and she encounters Ben when he’s at his lowest point, having been abandoned by his wife following his space journey. She helps him recognize his positive traits, which gives him the self-assurance to aid his team in defeating villains like Doctor Doom and Galactus.

As a die-hard Marvel fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when I think about Alicia in the MCU. With Rachel stepping into the spotlight now, it seems like there might not be much room left for Alicia’s unique charm. Yet, as I delve deeper into the source comics, I find solace in the fact that Alicia plays a significant role in some of Marvel’s most epic tales, such as during the “House of M” saga, where she becomes a member of the resistance battling against mutants.

Though it seems the MCU hasn’t quite caught up to adapting that legendary storyline yet, I can’t help but hope that they’ll soon bring Alicia’s character to life in another captivating narrative. Her infectious optimism and sunny disposition would undoubtedly light up any story she graces with her presence.
