A game originally released on the PlayStation 1 in 1997 has unexpectedly appeared on the PlayStation Store. Gamers who remember the PlayStation 1 from that time may fondly recall titles such as Final Fantasy 7, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Grand Theft Auto, Gran Turismo, Tomb Raider II, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, Riven, Mega Man Legends, Colony Wars, Einhander, NFL GameDay 98, Final Fantasy Tactics, and others. The year 1997 was a standout period for gaming, and many PS1 games were overlooked at the time.
Among them, one character is undeniably Tomba from Whoopee Camp and Sony itself. This action-adventure game didn’t hit the west until 1998, but it initially launched in Japan in 1997. It was well-received, as shown by its 84 score on Game Rankings. Given the team behind it – primarily Tokuro Fujiwara, who established the studio following his groundbreaking work at Capcom – this isn’t all that unexpected. However, it didn’t sell particularly well, though it did gather enough support to warrant a sequel, Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return, which was approved and released in 1999.
Over the span of years, it garnered a reputation as a cult-favorite, and then, two decades down the line, it found its way onto Nintendo Switch, PS5, and PC in 2024, graced with an upgraded re-release. And now, a year later, this re-release has unexpectedly landed on the PS4, available through the PlayStation Store. Just like the initial launch, this latest edition has been distributed by Limited Run Games.
“In Tomba! Special Edition, the legendary platformer makes its comeback! Play as Tomba, the protagonist, and traverse beautiful 2.5D environments filled with leaping, biting, and throwing. Your goal is to outwit a group of wicked pigs who have caused chaos. During your journey, you’ll find ancient artifacts, meet intriguing characters, take on exciting missions, and uncover hidden riches. This game offers an engaging blend of linear and open-ended gameplay.”
It’s uncertain if there’s any distinction between the latest PS4 edition and the earlier PS5 version. If differences exist, they haven’t been explained yet. Regardless, PS4 and PS4 Pro users now have the opportunity to purchase this game from the PlayStation Store for $19.99.
