With an estimated production cost of just $100 million, Disney’s updated Lilo & Stitch remake has generated an astounding $923 million globally. Such a return is something that most Hollywood blockbusters would envy, especially in the current climate where Disney’s original films are struggling. Given this near-ideal profit margin, a sequel became almost inevitable.

Initially conceived for exclusive streaming on Disney+, the movie later transformed into a theatrical release following private viewings that surpassed expectations. This means that Disney was initially uncertain about its potential success on the big screen, but changed their mind when they saw promising box office figures.

There were no names mentioned, no intriguing plot details shared, and no hint about whether the original team would rejoin. However, when you’re Disney in 2025, such details seem inconsequential. It’s all about leveraging well-known intellectual properties. The strategy is to focus on Stitch, a charismatic blue alien with immense merchandising potential, for our upcoming project.

This sequel announcement comes amid another challenging summer for Disney’s original content, with Pixar’s latest release, Elio, recording the studio’s lowest opening weekend ever at $21 million. Meanwhile, other long-standing projects like Snow White, Mufasa, and Moana have been generating more news for controversy than artistic innovation.

Disney discovered from “Lilo & Stitch” that it isn’t just about delivering quality; rather, the audience appreciates nostalgia, creative marketing, and a lower budget to succeed at the box office. This is particularly true when compared to investing $200 million into an original story, which often fails to recoup even half of that amount.
