Jimmy Olsen’s 5 Craziest Relationships

Jimmy Olsen, Superman’s closest friend, has gone through his fair share of extraordinary escapades, much like the Man of Steel himself. The latest cinematic portrayal of Jimmy that stays true to the comics was in James Gunn’s Superman, where he was shown as irresistible to women. Although this might have perplexed those unfamiliar with his character, die-hard Jimmy Olsen fans are well aware that the red-haired photographer is a magnet for women, almost as if there were no tomorrow. Over the years, he has had numerous women trying to win him over, and some of these relationships have been quite intense.

In this list, you’ll find five of Jimmy’s most unusual romantic entanglements. You may be taken aback by some of these unconventional connections.

1) Power Girl

In the world of DC Comics, Jimmy Olsen is often Superman’s closest friend, yet he harbored feelings for an alternate reality version of Superman’s cousin, Power Girl. As depicted in DC’s Harley Quinn Romances, Superman grew concerned when Power Girl became too isolated, prompting him to arrange a date with the man he considered his best. Jimmy and Power Girl found a connection, with Jimmy’s admiration for her heroic persona certainly working in his favor. However, their evening was abruptly interrupted as Divine, Power Girl’s malevolent twin, attacked. Although she managed to save everyone, Divine decided it was safer to keep others at arm’s length, fearing the loss of another loved one. Had she known about Jimmy’s ordinary outings that often resulted in transformations into animals and romances with alien royalty, she might have reconsidered her decision. Nevertheless, Divine was resolute in ending the relationship, despite their mutual fondness for each other. Although we never got to witness the blossoming of this romance, it could provide amusing material for a future storyline.

2) Maggie Mxyzptlk

Maggie, who might or might not be connected to Superman’s persistent trickster foe Mr. Mxyzptlk, debuted in issue #896 of Action Comics. In a charity auction, Jimmy Olsen became a sought-after item as dates with Metropolis’ most eligible bachelors were up for grabs. Despite being the sole bidder, Maggie spent a million dollars to secure her date with Jimmy. After touring Metropolis together, things took an unexpected turn when she revealed her hard-to-pronounce name on a business card, causing Jimmy to attempt an escape through the restroom. In response, Maggie abruptly planned a wedding for them both, which Jimmy continued to try and flee from. It was then revealed that Maggie had transported him into a world where all his deepest desires had been fulfilled. He found himself as the Daily Planet’s top reporter and even assisted his friend as Co-Superman. However, it turned out that Jimmy still harbored feelings for his ex, Chloe, prompting Maggie to pursue Superboy instead after confessing the entire world was designed to teach Jimmy about love’s significance. To be fair, dating a denizen of the fifth dimension doesn’t usually end this well, and it’s certainly an improvement over Jimmy’s previous encounter with a crush from that dimension.

3) Jix

Although Maggie merely attempted to convince Jimmy to get married, Jix unexpectedly managed to marry him, even though neither of them intended it. Interestingly, Jix is an interdimensional and interplanetary jewel thief, seeking to recover her family’s gems that were stolen when her people were enslaved by an alien race centuries ago. She encountered Jimmy Olsen during a mission in Gorilla City, which led to their unconventional union. After waking up with a hangover the next morning, they were married without any real plans for a long-term relationship. However, Jix left immediately after the wedding and their encounters throughout the second volume of Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen. Despite their legal marriage, they never truly formed a couple, but Jimmy did manage to gain her respect by the end. Amusingly, this wasn’t the first time Jimmy had to annul his marriage, but it was the longest lasting one, despite its brevity due to Jix’s departure. Indeed, this is classic Jimmy.

4) Forager II

In an unusual twist, Jimmy Olsen’s relationship with Forager was particularly strange, not due to Forager being an alien bug-person, but because the circumstances under which it began were quite unusual. This unusual beginning unfolded during the disliked “Countdown to Infinite Crisis” storyline. Darkseid, a powerful villain, had taken control of Jimmy Olsen’s body, using him as a vessel for the souls of the New Gods, planning to use him as a living bomb to remake the universe. This possession granted Jimmy extraordinary powers and gradually changed his personality. It was during this period that he met Forager, who developed feelings for the transformed Jimmy, and they began dating. However, once Jimmy was cured of his possession, he behaved quite differently from before, which Forager found unappealing, leading her to end their relationship, leaving poor Jimmy heartbroken once more.

5) Bruna the Gorilla

In the comic book “Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen” #98, we find Jimmy Olsen venturing into the jungle to cover a movie production. Desiring a leading role, he attempted to mimic Tarzan’s exploits. However, instead of landing a part in the film, he caught the attention of Bruna, a gorilla revered as a local deity. Inspired by “King Kong,” Bruna decided she too wanted a human lover-boy.

The producers had been showing her various movies, and after watching “King Kong,” Bruna took it upon herself to enact her own version of the story. Superman’s attempts to separate Jimmy from Bruna only escalated her destructive tantrums, leading Superman and Jimmy’s girlfriend Lucy to decide that Jimmy should remain with Bruna until they could find a way to calm her down.

In an effort to escape this bizarre situation, Jimmy resorted to teaching Bruna the concept of “monkey see, monkey do.” This led to Bruna imitating a scene from a movie where a gorilla pushes someone off a cliff, which she did to Jimmy. Fortunately, Superman was there to save Jimmy from what could have been the world’s most unusual divorce.

This tale is a prime example of Silver Age absurdity, and one can only hope that Jimmy’s actions won’t inadvertently cause any unintended consequences.

To sum it up, we’re looking at five of Jimmy Olsen’s most unusual and eccentric romantic connections. This list is far from exhaustive, as it only covers the individuals whom Jimmy voluntarily associated with, not counting the numerous women who have unsuccessfully pursued him throughout the years. If we were to include them, the list would be significantly longer. From Miss Gzptlsnz, an ex of Mr. Mxyzptlk, to Dialla the living protoplasm, Jimmy has attracted more than his fair share of admirers. In truth, his relationship with Eve in the upcoming film seems much more plausible to fans than many other aspects of the movie.
