Quentin Tarantino is a highly respected filmmaker with a successful 30-year career, known for hits like Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds. Recently, he shared his list of the 20 best films of the 21st century. Among titles like Toy Story 3, Dunkirk, and There Will Be Blood, he included a 2002 horror film that’s currently available to stream for free, calling it one of the best.
Eli Roth’s horror-comedy, Cabin Fever, about a vacation gone wrong when college grads encounter a flesh-eating virus, landed on Quentin Tarantino’s list of the best films of the 21st century. Tarantino mentioned on The Bret Easton Podcast in December that while he considers Hostel Roth’s strongest work, Cabin Fever is his personal favorite, praising its unique blend of humor, tension, and gore. He noted the film’s surprisingly tense first half and genuinely funny finale. A standout horror film from the 2000s, Cabin Fever is now available to stream for free on Tubi as of April 1st.
Eli Roth’s Cabin Fever Is One of the Best Cabin-In-The-Woods Horrors
While many horror movies use the classic “cabin in the woods” setup, Cabin Fever stands out as one of the best. It takes that familiar scenario and twists it into a tense fight for survival, but the threat isn’t a typical slasher – it’s a terrifying, rapidly spreading virus that eats away at the flesh. The film explores not only the gruesome physical effects of the virus, but also the way fear and panic break down the group of friends, leading to mistrust, desperate choices, and surprisingly dark humor. And when it comes to the gore, Cabin Fever delivers with truly unsettling practical effects, including memorable scenes of decaying skin – like the infamous leg-shaving scene.
When Cabin Fever first came out, it didn’t receive a lot of praise. Critics were split, and it was generally considered just another horror movie. While it earned a 62% score from critics and a 44% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it unexpectedly became a financial success, earning $30 million on a tiny $1.5 million budget. This success led to a franchise with three sequels, including a 2016 remake. Now, the film is much more highly regarded than it was initially, and is celebrated for its distinctive dark humor and memorable, gruesome scenes.
Other Horror Movies Now on Tubi
Tubi offers a large collection of horror movies, all available to stream without a subscription fee. Recent additions in April included classics like Carrie (both the 1976 and 2019 versions), It Comes at Night, the Jeepers Creepers films, the original Scream trilogy, and Zombieland 2: Double Tap. They expanded their horror selection even more on May 1st, adding titles like Hannibal, House at the End of the Street, Misery, and The Final Girls.
