A beloved sci-fi disaster film from the 1990s is now available on Paramount+. If you enjoyed Armageddon, this movie is a must-see! The ’90s were a fantastic time for disaster films, and this one, directed by Michael Bay, truly stands out. It’s packed with action and special effects, and helped define the modern blockbuster. Still popular today, fans can now easily stream it on Paramount+.
In 1998, two strikingly similar disaster movies competed for the same audience. Just before Armageddon became a blockbuster, Deep Impact – a space-themed disaster film – was released and is now available to stream on Paramount+. The movie, with Steven Spielberg as an executive producer and a cast including Robert Duvall, Téa Leoni, Elijah Wood, and Morgan Freeman, tells the story of a dangerous attempt to destroy a massive comet on a collision course with Earth, one that could cause a global extinction event. It began streaming on Paramount+ on April 1st.
Deep Impact Is a More Grounded Armageddon Alternative
Both Deep Impact and Armageddon are disaster movies about Earth facing a threat from space, but they’re very different in how they tell the story. Armageddon is fast-paced and full of action, while Deep Impact focuses more on the emotional impact on people. Instead of explosions and heroic missions, Deep Impact explores the months and years before the predicted impact, showing how individuals, governments, and society cope with the knowledge of an impending, devastating event. Many also consider Deep Impact to be more realistic in its science, with a more believable timeline and a more accurate portrayal of the potential destruction.
While Deep Impact took a more thoughtful and character-focused approach to the disaster movie formula, it didn’t perform as well at the box office as Armageddon. Deep Impact earned $349 million with an $80 million budget, compared to Armageddon‘s $553 million. Still, it was the sixth highest-grossing film of the year, and both movies received similar mixed reviews from critics—Deep Impact has a 45% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and Armageddon has 42%. Over time, both films have become beloved ’90s sci-fi classics. Armageddon is remembered as a fun, over-the-top blockbuster, while Deep Impact stands out as a more realistic and emotionally resonant story.
What’s New on Paramount+?
Paramount+ has added a bunch of new movies this April! A large wave of titles, including films like Airplane!, Galaxy Quest, and Paycheck, arrived on April 1st along with Deep Impact. More recently, they’ve also added Breach, Cujo, Night of the Sicario, Total Recall, and True Grit.
