A Classic Hulk Character Is a Brand New Spider-Man Character

Rick Jones is a truly unique character in Marvel Comics history. He began as a young sidekick to the Hulk, famously being the only one who could calm him down. Over time, he became an honorary Avenger, Captain America’s partner (taking on the role of Bucky), and gained a connection to the original Captain Marvel through special bands. He’s even been the Hulk and the A-Bomb, and at one point served as a host for powerful, otherworldly beings. Rick Jones has touched almost every corner of the Marvel Universe, working alongside countless heroes. While often known as a sidekick, he’s also proven himself a hero, and is now reinventing himself once again with a brand new persona.

Rick had been trying to leave his superhero days behind and concentrate on his job at the Daily Bugle. However, he got pulled back into trouble when the government started pursuing Mary Jane, who was secretly the new Venom. Before anyone knew her identity, Rick was the prime suspect, and a group called S.C.A.R. kidnapped him. He managed to escape with help from the Sleeper symbiote, Venom, and Agent Anti-Venom, but the Toxin symbiote was failing. Rick stepped up and volunteered to become Toxin’s new host.

Introducing Captain Spider

Following his escape from the S.C.A.R. facility, Rick chose to remain connected to Toxin. Now possessing new abilities, Rick quickly resumed his role as a superhero. When the fast-moving, social media-loving villain Blue Streak committed a large robbery to showcase his new golden cannon, Venom attempted to intervene. However, their efforts were interrupted by the arrival of S.C.A.R., now under the command of Doctor Octopus. Recognizing a chance to test their combined strength, Rick and Toxin joined the fight to stop Blue Streak.

Toxin, the son of Carnage, is known for his violent tendencies, but Rick Jones attempted to guide him towards heroism. However, Toxin immediately responded to Rick’s talk of ‘tears’ with a disturbing comment about blood, revealing his darker nature. Eager to prove himself as a hero to Rick, Toxin aggressively attacked a minor villain. They were managing well until Doctor Octopus intervened and managed to subdue the symbiote. Just as Otto was about to defeat Rick, Mary Jane and Venom arrived, surprisingly dressed in new Spider-Man costumes.

The Most Important Unsung Hero in Marvel

Okay, so Rick Jones is back at it again, this time as Captain Spider, and honestly, he’s got a real challenge ahead of him trying to manage Toxin. But if anyone can turn a seriously dangerous symbiote like that into something good, it’s Rick. I mean, the guy’s a pro at getting through to the Hulk, even when he’s completely lost it! It’s amazing how much this guy has been involved with – he’s touched pretty much every major hero in the Marvel Universe. And this new role as Captain Spider? It’s a cool way to finally tie him into the Venom and Spider-Man storylines, even if it took a while to happen.

It’s easy to imagine Rick appearing as a helper in future Venom or Spider-Man stories – he’s just that kind of character. He almost always jumps at the chance to help or be a hero, and his connection to Spider-Man fits that pattern. Because of his experiences with the more fantastical parts of the Marvel universe, and his encounters with monsters like Captain Marvel and the Hulk, Rick would be a great mentor for symbiotes, creatures that fall somewhere between cosmic beings and traditional monsters.

Now that Rick has teamed up with Spider-Man, the X-Men are the only major superhero group he hasn’t worked closely with. It’s amazing how far he’s come – from a typical teenage helper to a hero like the Hulk’s moral guide and Captain Spider, Rick has truly earned his place among the greats. He just needs to stay committed to the hero role long enough to make a lasting impact.
