Streaming services are constantly changing what they offer, so sometimes great TV shows and movies disappear. Recently, a popular dark comedy from the 1980s that hadn’t been available for streaming in a while returned to Peacock, just before a new series based on the original is released.
Ahead of the premiere of Peacock’s new show based on The ‘Burbs on February 8th, viewers can stream the original 1989 film now. Starring Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern, and Carrie Fisher, the movie arrived on Peacock on February 1st. This cult classic follows a suburban dad who suspects his new neighbors are hiding something sinister, leading to increasingly frantic and humorous attempts to uncover the truth.
The ‘Burbs Is a Staple of 1980s Dark Comedy
When The ‘Burbs first came out, it wasn’t a blockbuster. It earned a modest $49 million worldwide and received mixed reviews, scoring 56% on the Tomatometer. However, audiences liked it more, giving it a 71% rating, and over time it’s become a beloved cult classic, especially for fans of 1980s horror comedies.
What truly makes The ‘Burbs great is its skillful blend of different elements. Director Dante creates a tone that’s both cozy and creepy, mixing witty satire about suburban anxieties with silly slapstick and genuine scares. The film expertly balances hilarious, over-the-top scenes with a growing sense of unease, keeping you guessing until the very end about whether the new neighbors are dangerous or just eccentric. It’s a smart social commentary that’s also incredibly fun and escapist, and Tom Hanks delivers a memorable, energetic performance as Ray.
