A Cult Classic ‘90s Vampire Movie Is Finally Back on HBO Max

Vampires have always been a popular part of our culture. Ever since Bram Stoker’s Dracula was published in 1897, these mysterious, undead creatures have fascinated people, especially in movies. Dracula has been adapted for the screen many times, as has Nosferatu, and other types of vampires have also had their moments in film. The Twilight Saga was incredibly popular and still has a dedicated fanbase, and this year’s Sinners offered a fresh story for vampire lovers. However, the 1990s were a particularly good era for vampire movies of all kinds. Now, a beloved classic is available again on HBO Max just in time for Halloween-coincidentally, as a TV series based on the same story begins its second season on Netflix.

On October first, HBO Max will add the 1994 film Interview With the Vampire. This movie is a beloved classic within goth subculture and features Tom Cruise-before he became famous for his daring action sequences-alongside Brad Pitt. It’s based on Anne Rice’s influential gothic novel of the same name. The film centers on the connection between the vampires Lestat (played by Cruise) and Louis (played by Pitt), beginning with Lestat turning Louis into a vampire. The narrative unfolds as a modern-day interview, with Louis recounting his life story to a journalist (Christian Slater), spanning two hundred years. Antonio Banderas and Kirsten Dunst also star in the film.

AMC Has Adapted Interview With the Vampire for TV, But the Movie Is Closest to Rice’s Novel

The movie version of Interview With the Vampire was the initial live-action take on Anne Rice’s novel, but it wasn’t the last. In May 2020, AMC bought the rights to all the books in Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles series, and in 2022, a new adaptation premiered. The first two seasons of this series cover Interview With the Vampire (with the second book, The Vampire Lestat, planned as the foundation for a future third season). Season 2 of that series is currently streaming on Netflix, but those who enjoy the story of Louis and Lestat should also check out the 1994 film. While AMC’s adaptation takes some liberties with Rice’s original story, the film remains a much closer adaptation of the novel.

It’s especially interesting that the movie stayed so true to Anne Rice’s novel, considering Rice actually wrote the film’s screenplay. However, the adaptation could have turned out quite differently. Rice was heavily involved in the production-she even envisioned Cher playing the character of Louis! She also reportedly wanted Anjelica Huston to portray Lestat. Ultimately, the movie was made with a story that closely followed the book and became a commercial success. Despite its potential to launch a series, a sequel wasn’t released for almost a decade, and it wasn’t nearly as popular.

Interview With the Vampire is now streaming on HBO Max.
