A DreamWorks Movie That Set an Unfortunate Record Just Started Streaming on Peacock

DreamWorks Animation has been a major player in animated movies since 1994, creating popular and successful franchises like Shrek and How to Train Your Dragon. However, not all of their films have been hits. One movie, released in 2021, actually set a record for the studio as a particularly unsuccessful release, and it’s now available to stream for Peacock subscribers.

The animated film Spirit Untamed became available on Peacock on April 30th, five years after its disappointing theatrical release. While it was a fresh take on the 2002 film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron and inspired by the Spirit Riding Free series on Netflix, Spirit Untamed unfortunately became DreamWorks Animation’s lowest-grossing movie in theaters. Despite a relatively modest $30 million budget, the film only earned a little over $42 million worldwide, making it a significant box office failure, particularly when compared to the original film’s $122 million global earnings.

DreamWorks’ Spirit Untamed Underperformed at the Box Office but Was a Hit With Audiences

Don’t let the movie’s disappointing box office results stop you from seeing Spirit Untamed. Those who went to the theater found it well worth the price of admission. It earned a fantastic 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes – just slightly behind other popular films like The Wild Robot, and even higher than Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The story follows Lucky Prescott, a girl who moves from the city to live with her father in a small town and develops a strong connection with a wild horse named Spirit. When a cruel horseman tries to capture Spirit’s herd, Lucky and her friends set off on a thrilling adventure to save them.

Although critics gave Spirit Untamed a lukewarm score of 48%, most viewers really enjoyed it. They praised the film as a warm, fun, and family-friendly adventure that kids will love, and they appreciated its positive message about courage, self-belief, and family. The movie also features strong character relationships, especially between Lucky and her friends, and boasts the beautiful, exciting animation DreamWorks is known for.

Other Family-Friendly Movies Now on Peacock

Peacock had a fantastic April for family viewing! Before adding Spirit Untamed on April 30th, the streaming service added a bunch of other popular kids’ titles. These included DreamWorks films like Bee Movie and the first three Kung Fu Panda movies, plus The Prince of Egypt. They also offered the live-action Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat and the classic ‘90s hit Space Jam.
