It’s a fantastic time to be a fantasy enthusiast! The 21st century has seen a resurgence in the genre’s popularity, not just in movies, but especially on television. While shows like Game of Thrones, The Witcher, and The Wheel of Time are well-known, some excellent fantasy series haven’t gotten the recognition they deserve. One of those hidden gems, which ran for four seasons between 2018 and 2021, is about to become available for free streaming, but there’s a catch for fans.
Good news for fans of The Outpost! This fantasy-adventure series, which originally aired on The CW from 2018 to 2021, is becoming more accessible. The show follows the last member of a fallen race as she seeks revenge and learns to use supernatural abilities to protect the world. Starting May 1st, you can stream the first season – all 10 episodes – for free on Kanopy. Kanopy is a streaming service that you can access with a library card or university login. While not all four seasons will be available immediately, this is a great way to revisit or discover the beginning of The Outpost.
The CW’s The Outpost Deserves More Attention
Despite only lasting four seasons due to falling viewership and ratings, The Outpost is a show worth watching. While critics weren’t always fans, the series developed a dedicated fanbase and consistently earned positive reviews from viewers – averaging an 84% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes throughout its run on The CW. The first season was particularly well-received by audiences, scoring 88% compared to a 50% critic rating.
Critics initially overlooked the show due to its simple production style, but it leaned into that aesthetic, creating an adventurous feel reminiscent of Xena: Warrior Princess. Unlike many fantasy shows, The Outpost avoided overly complicated political storylines, instead focusing on developing its characters, their relationships, and gradually building a detailed world. Over time, the show expanded its mythology, introducing unique cultures like the Kahvi, powerful gods, and intricate political conflicts, all while keeping the focus on the personal journeys, moral dilemmas, and romances of its characters. Despite its cancellation, the series offered a satisfying conclusion, neatly resolving the main storylines involving Talon and her companions.
What’s New on Kanopy?
Kanopy is a top-notch streaming service with a fantastic selection of films that’s constantly expanding. Just last month, April, they added a bunch of great titles, including the new movies Dream Scenario and Shelby Oaks, along with the beloved animated film Watership Down. They also brought on classics like Crash, Face/Off, Masters of the Universe, and George A. Romero’s Resident Evil.
