Man, it’s crazy how close some of my favorite game series have come to never happening. Game development is just… complicated. So many things can go wrong, and even with the best planning, stuff hits the fan. You hear about games getting cancelled all the time, but sometimes they just get stuck in development limbo forever. The biggest example for me is Duke Nukem Forever. It took fifteen years to finally come out, and honestly? It totally flopped and pretty much killed the whole franchise. It’s a reminder that even a long wait doesn’t guarantee a good game!
Many games get stuck in development for years, like BioShock 4, but Dead Island 2 actually made it through. It was first announced at E3 in 2014 with a stunning trailer, and was originally planned for release in 2015. Developers even showed it off to the press at Gamescom. They had big plans for an eight-player co-op mode, but the project ran into a lot of problems, delaying the game for nearly ten years. At one point, it seemed like it would never come out, but the team kept working on it, and now the series will continue with a sequel.
Dead Island 3 Announcement Is a Rare Win for a Franchise Stuck in Development Hell

This week, it was officially announced that Dead Island 3 is currently being developed and is expected to launch in 2028. This is great news for fans, as many games that spend years in development end up damaging the series when they finally release. Developing these games can be very expensive, and it’s often hard to earn back the investment. This can even discourage developers from revisiting the franchise in the future.
The development of Dead Island 2 was quite unusual. The first studio working on the game, Yager Interactive, was removed from the project because they and the publisher, Deep Silver, had different ideas for what the game should be. However, Deep Silver didn’t want to cancel the game altogether. So, in 2015, Sumo Digital took over, but they were later replaced by Dambuster Studios, who ultimately finished the game. It was a long and complicated process with multiple studios involved.
Developing Dead Island 2 was a challenging process, with three different studios working on it. Thankfully, the final product is a surprisingly good and well-made game, despite not being flawless. It proved to be a commercial success, selling over 3 million copies. Now, a third game is in the works, and hints suggest it will take place in a new setting, possibly outside of Los Angeles, as shown in a recent teaser featuring a character departing the city.
While Dead Island 2 was a bit smaller in scope than the original, Dead Island 3 might bring back the larger scale of the first game. The original Dead Island featured vehicles, but the second game limited players to smaller, separate areas. Hopefully, Dead Island 3‘s development will be smoother and less troubled than its predecessors.
