In just one week, from May 26th-June 1st, it was streamed an astounding 750 million minutes on Disney+. This figure surpasses some of the other top films in the realm of streaming, such as “The Wild Robot” (with 654 million minutes) and the original animated “Lilo & Stitch” (394 million minutes). It’s a testament to its popularity and the magic it weaves on screen.
As a devoted movie-goer, I recall the release of “Captain America: Brave New World” way back in February. Critics were split on this one, and it showed at the box office – the film barely scraped together $415.1 million worldwide, landing itself as the sixth least profitable MCU flick to date. Even “Thunderbolts,” which followed, managed to underperform with a global total of only $381.4 million. These less-than-stellar performances might just push Marvel Studios towards some major adjustments in their future projects – perhaps they’ll become pickier when it comes to deciding which characters take center stage in their upcoming films.
On May 28th, “Captain America: Brave New World” made its debut on Disney+. Before this, the movie was available for rental and purchase across different digital platforms, and the Blu-ray version was released in mid-May. The premiere on Disney+ represented the first opportunity for fans to watch “Brave New World” at home without additional charges, with the only cost being a subscription to Disney+.
In today’s era of streaming, it’s now normal for movies that flopped at the box office to gain a second chance on streaming platforms. For some viewers, the convenience of watching a film with mixed reviews from home is more enticing than going to the theater to see it. Just recently, Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White saw success on streaming after a lackluster run in cinemas. Although Disney would undoubtedly prefer these films to be successful both at the box office and on streaming services, they can find some comfort knowing that Disney+ is helping people rediscover titles they may have missed in theaters.
It’s heartening to see that people are choosing to watch “Captain America: Brave New World” at home in their spare time. The character of Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie, will be central to the upcoming Multiverse Saga, with appearances planned for both “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” In an exciting twist revealed during the post-credits scene of “Thunderbolts,” Sam has gathered his own team of Avengers to safeguard the world. It’ll be intriguing to observe how this new team aligns with the battle against Doctor Doom. Given the high viewership on streaming platforms, it seems fans will have a good understanding of Sam’s recent activities when “Doomsday” is released.
