A New Live-Action Adaptation of a Classic Anime is Coming This Summer

Recently, we’ve seen more and more anime series successfully adapted into live-action shows. Titles like One Piece, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Yu Yu Hakusho have proven popular, bringing well-known anime stories to a wider audience. This summer, another beloved anime is getting the live-action treatment. Unlike many recent adaptations produced by Netflix, this new series will come from a different source, offering a fresh take on a classic high school story that’s become a legend among anime fans.

GTO, or Grand Teacher Onizuka, is a popular comedy anime about a former troublemaker who becomes a teacher and helps his students. Since the original manga came out in 1997 by Tooru Fujisawa, there have been several live-action versions. A special titled “GTO Revival” aired in 2024, and now a brand new series is coming in July 2024 on Fuji TV in Japan. Excitingly, Takashi Sorimachi, who recently played Onizuka, will be returning to the role, bringing a fresh take on this classic story.

GTO Returns

Takashi Sorimachi, the star of the series, recently shared his thoughts on returning to the role of Onizuka. He’s aiming for a portrayal that’s more faithful to the original manga than his performance in the 2024 special. While he enjoyed the one-off drama, he believes a full series allows for a different approach. He envisions playing a more mature, ‘stay-at-home’ version of Onizuka, similar to the 1998 character, and feels a 50-year-old Onizuka presents a unique challenge. He’s excited to explore how this older Onizuka views the modern world and what lessons he’d share with students, hoping to deliver a series that satisfies longtime fans of the original ‘GTO’.

If you missed the original anime, you’re in luck! It’s now streaming on Crunchyroll and Amazon Prime Video. Interestingly, Grand Teacher Onizuka did something unusual: it got a live-action TV show before the anime even came out, showing how popular the series has been across different formats. While we don’t know yet if the new live-action adaptation coming this summer will be available in North America, there’s still hope!
