Science fiction is a hugely popular genre, and for good reason. The best sci-fi movies tell imaginative stories that make us think about what it means to be human and our place in the universe – often exploring new planets, advanced technology, and the possibility of life beyond Earth, and whether that life would be friendly. While big-budget blockbusters often dominate the genre, some incredible independent sci-fi films deserve recognition, and one standout is coming to Hulu this week.
On May 26th, Hulu will begin streaming Descendent, a 2025 film from Rustic Films. Written and directed by Peter Cilella, the movie stars Ross Marquand as Sean, a man struggling with stress and personal issues as he and his wife, Andrea (played by Sarah Bolger), await their first child. One night, while fixing a lightbulb on the roof, Sean falls after seeing something unusual in the sky. As he recovers, he experiences visions of a spacecraft and discovers a newfound talent for art, leading everyone to wonder what truly happened to him.
Descendent Isn’t Your Ordinary Alien Abduction Story
At first glance, Descendent appears to be a typical alien abduction story, but it’s much more than that. Though it includes the element of alien abduction, the film is fundamentally about the experience of becoming a parent and the anxieties that come with it. What happens to Sean on the roof fundamentally changes him, forcing him to redefine himself and navigate a completely unfamiliar world. This transformation serves as a metaphor for parenthood – a life-altering event that turns everything upside down. Just like an alien encounter, becoming a parent is disorienting and presents significant challenges.
The film delves into the lasting effects of trauma. The main character, Sean, is grappling with the loss of his father, which affects his emotional well-being and his ability to be a parent. Along with a look at the anxieties of parenthood, Descendent is a deeply personal and complex sci-fi film that, like the best in the genre, offers a raw and insightful exploration of the human condition. Though it wasn’t a major box office hit, Descendent is a hidden gem worth watching on Hulu.
