Ewan McGregor is a hugely popular actor, especially with Star Wars fans. He’s become well-known thanks to his portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel films and the recent 2022 series of the same name. However, he’s starred in many other films, including Birds of Prey and Moulin Rouge. Currently, one of his lesser-known 2014 crime thrillers is available to stream on Tubi, but it won’t be there for long, so be sure to watch it soon!
You can now watch Son of a Gun on Tubi. This action film, directed by Julius Avery, features Ewan McGregor and Brenton Thwaites. The story follows JR, a young criminal who ends up in prison and quickly learns how tough life can be. While incarcerated, he gets protection from a dangerous criminal named Brendan Lynch (McGregor), but it comes with a catch. After his release, JR finds himself needing to orchestrate a daring prison break to repay the favor and free Lynch.
Son of a Gun Is a Solid Genre Movie (And Change of Pace for McGregor)
Calling Son of a Gun a disappointment would be an understatement. With a $12 million budget, it only earned under a million dollars at the box office. Critics had mixed reactions, but the film isn’t necessarily bad. It doesn’t break new ground in the crime thriller genre, but it’s a solid, well-made movie. Its deliberate pacing and structure actually enhance the suspense, and the layered plot – following JR’s journey and the plan to free Lynch – adds depth. Once they’re out of prison, the film evolves into a heist gone wrong. Ultimately, Son of a Gun is more than just a crime story; it’s also about the complexities of relationships and trust.
While the story and characters in Son of a Gun aren’t particularly remarkable, the acting truly elevates the film. Thwaites delivers a fantastic performance as JR, convincingly portraying a character who is angry, paranoid, and insecure. However, McGregor shines as Lynch, a violent yet surprisingly compassionate criminal. He’s not simply a one-dimensional villain; he’s calculated and only resorts to violence when necessary, but also possesses a dangerous unpredictability. This is a unique role for McGregor and highlights his impressive acting range.
I recently discovered this movie, and even though it didn’t make a huge splash in theaters twelve years ago, I’m really enjoying it on Tubi right now. But heads up – it looks like it might be leaving the platform soon! I’ve noticed it’s on the “Leaving Soon” list, which usually means it’ll be gone by the end of the month. If you want to see what I think is Ewan McGregor’s best performance, I’d recommend checking it out quickly!
