Over the years, many excellent Star Wars games have been released, but some haven’t been updated or re-released. There are often various reasons why this happens. However, one Star Wars game is coming back after 26 years, and it has a surprising connection to Lord of the Rings! We’re incredibly excited about it.
Back in 2000, the board game Star Wars: The Queen’s Gambit let players fight battles on various game boards, inspired by Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace. Now, Restoration Games and Space Cowboys are bringing back the gameplay with a new theme. This time, instead of Star Wars, the game is set in the world of The Lord of the Rings and is called The Lord of the Rings: The King’s Gambit.
The King’s Gambit Trades Star Wars for Lord of the Rings, But The Gameplay Is Intact

Restoration Games and Space Cowboys are bringing back a beloved classic game! They’re launching a crowdfunding campaign for a special, deluxe edition, but a standard version will also be available in stores. The game, called The King’s Gambit, lets players control the Riders of Rohan as they fight Orcs on the Pelennor Fields, and the people of Gondor as they defend Minas Tirith against the forces of darkness.
Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas are racing to Pelargir, hoping to join the fight, while Frodo and Sam struggle onward through Mordor towards Mount Doom. With important choices to make, a wealth of detail, and multiple paths to victory, fans of the series are expecting something truly remarkable.
This feels similar to the battles in Star Wars, like the clashes between the Gungans and the droid army, Queen Amidala’s forces against the Trade Federation, Darth Maul’s duel with the Jedi, and the space fight between Anakin and the droid control ship. The Lord of the Rings sets a good precedent for the game’s large scale, and if The King’s Gambit keeps the gameplay engaging, it’s likely to be very successful when it launches.
Okay, so I just heard about the crowdfunding campaign for this game, and it sounds awesome! They’re planning to offer some really cool deluxe edition stuff, like 3D models of Minas Tirith and Mordor – basically, cool bookends for your game space. They’re aiming to launch the campaign later in 2026, but we’ll probably be able to buy the regular game in stores around 2027. I’m definitely keeping an eye on this one!
