February is usually associated with love and romance thanks to Valentine’s Day, and you can find plenty of romantic comedies to watch. However, if you’re a horror fan, Shudder is releasing a classic monster movie on their streaming service this month.
If you’re looking for something different, check out The Oily Maniac, a unique and unusual horror movie now streaming on Shudder as of February 1st. This 1976 film from Hong Kong is a bit of a cult classic, and while it might not be widely known, its interesting story and bizarre premise make it well worth a watch.
The Oily Maniac Is Wild, Weird, and Highly Entertaining

In the film The Oily Maniac, Shen Yuan (Danny Lee), a man with a disability, is asked to protect the daughter of a friend facing execution. He receives a magical spell that allows him to transform into a powerful, oil-based creature. Using this ability, he becomes a vigilante superhero, seeking out and punishing criminals. However, the spell is dangerous – those who misuse it face a gruesome fate. The film has a unique and unusual premise, creating a gritty, grindhouse-style monster movie experience.
Okay, so this isn’t just your typical monster movie, it’s way more than that! The Oily Maniac actually feels like a superhero flick, with the Maniac taking down all sorts of criminals – everything from shady plastic surgeons to pimps, and even his own corrupt boss. Honestly, it’s got a really surprising amount of adult content and violence, which sounds weird, but it totally works for the film’s vibe. Plus, there’s this cool twist – the main character, Shen Yuan, is a legal assistant when he’s not out being an oily vigilante, so we even get some courtroom scenes thrown in!
Honestly, The Oily Maniac is a truly unique monster movie. It’s unlike anything you’ve likely seen before, throwing everything into one film. While it’s not a masterpiece and the special effects aren’t great, there’s a strange charm to the monster transformation itself. Many horror fans haven’t discovered it yet, and now that it’s available on Shudder, it’s the perfect time to watch! As a fun extra, you’ll even hear a little bit of the Jaws theme. It’s a one-of-a-kind film you really shouldn’t skip.
