Since its start in 2008, Hulu has become known for its high-quality original shows. It’s consistently released popular hits, including recent favorites like The Bear and Paradise. Just months after one of its biggest shows ended after six seasons, Hulu has now released a much-awaited spin-off series.
Hulu truly became a major player in high-quality television with the release of The Handmaid’s Tale in 2017. Based on Margaret Atwood’s novel, the series was a huge success for the platform. Now, just a year after the story of June Osborne concluded, a sequel series, The Testaments, is continuing the narrative. Premiering on Hulu on April 8th, The Testaments is also based on an Atwood novel and picks up about five years after the events at the end of The Handmaid’s Tale. This new series follows a younger generation, including June and Luke’s daughter, Hannah/Agnes, as they struggle to survive within Gilead’s strict and controlling society.
The Testaments Takes Fans Back to Gilead for a Perfect Continuation of The Handmaid’s Tale
Just hours after its premiere, it’s clear that The Testaments is being well-received by critics. While it hasn’t yet made a big splash on Hulu’s streaming charts and general viewers are still forming their opinions, the show currently has an 85% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 27 reviews. This is a slightly higher score than the original The Handmaid’s Tale received for its first season (which earned 83%, compared to 91% for its debut).
The new series is a young adult drama that builds tension gradually, offering a different vibe from The Handmaid’s Tale. Instead of focusing on intense physical violence, it explores the psychological effects of manipulation, competition in school, and the everyday struggles of life in Gilead. According to James Hunt of ComicBook, the show is trying to establish its own unique identity, moving away from simply repeating elements of the original series, and features a quicker pace and a less depressing tone. However, it still retains many of the qualities that made The Handmaid’s Tale successful, including beautiful visuals and the return of Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia.
Will There Be a The Testaments Season 2?
While Hulu hasn’t officially announced a second season of The Testaments, it’s looking promising. The show is based on a novel that covers over 15 years, and season one only covered a part of it, leaving a lot of story remaining. Both the showrunner, Bruce Miller, and Ann Dowd have hinted at the possibility of multiple seasons, with Dowd telling Deadline that writing for Season 2 has already begun.
The first three episodes of The Testaments are available now on Hulu. New episodes will be released every Wednesday, with the final episode airing on May 27th – exactly one year after the last episode of the original series.
