Streaming services are great because they constantly add new movies – sometimes films people missed in theaters, or chances to rediscover hidden gems. Tubi, a free streaming service, is doing just that with a lesser-known movie starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Although it didn’t receive much praise when it came out, many consider it one of his strongest performances.
You can now watch A Million Little Pieces on Tubi. Originally released in theaters in 2018, the movie is based on James Frey’s book and features Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Frey, alongside Billy Bob Thornton, Odessa Young, Giovanni Ribisi, Juliette Lewis, and Charlie Hunnam. While the film wasn’t well-received by critics or audiences and didn’t do well in theaters, Taylor-Johnson’s acting was praised.
A Million Little Pieces Was Overshadowed By The Controversy Over the Book
The story behind A Million Little Pieces is more captivating than the book itself. Originally published in 2003, it presented itself as a memoir detailing the author’s experiences with addiction and recovery at age 23. The book, which included a particularly disturbing scene about dental work performed without anesthesia, quickly gained popularity after being selected for Oprah’s Book Club. However, soon after its release, questions arose about the truthfulness of Frey’s story. He eventually admitted to embellishing many details, and the book was later reclassified as a semi-fictional novel.
The film adaptation of the book came out over a decade after the book was published, with Sam Taylor-Johnson (the director’s wife) at the helm. It had a small theatrical release and was also available to rent or buy online, following a premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Though the movie didn’t get good reviews when it first came out, looking back now, much of the criticism seems tied to the controversy surrounding the book itself, even after all this time. While the film isn’t perfect – some found it overly dramatic or similar to other addiction stories – most complaints focused on the issues with the source material. It’s unfortunate, because Charlie Hunnam and Aaron Taylor-Johnson both give strong performances in the movie.
The movie is surprisingly good if you can separate it from the issues surrounding the book it’s based on. The acting is strong, and it touches on some genuinely moving themes. If you approach it as a fictional story, A Million Little Pieces is worth watching, and it’s available on Tubi this month.
