After eight seasons, the ABC drama is more popular than ever. The season finale just achieved record-breaking viewership numbers.
The season finale of The Rookie, titled “The Bandit,” drew 9.25 million viewers on ABC on May 4th. This number, measured by Nielsen ratings including both traditional TV and streaming, represents a 4% increase over last season’s finale, which had 8.93 million viewers on May 13, 2025.
The final episode of Season 8 marked the end of a three-week climb in viewers for The Rookie, attracting the show’s biggest audience since January 26th. This viewing count includes numbers from ABC, Hulu, Disney+’s Hulu access, and other digital platforms over a seven-day period.
The Rookie Ends the Season on a High
Season 8 of The Rookie didn’t just have a strong finale – it was a record-breaker. The finale reached the highest number of viewers for any episode on streaming platforms throughout the entire season, and it also attracted the largest audience in the 18-49 age group with a 2.1 rating when counting delayed viewing. The season began just as strongly, delivering the show’s best premiere audience across all platforms in over six years and the most-streamed premiere episode ever.
For the fourth consecutive season (2025-26), viewership for The Rookie continued to climb, reaching 9.04 million viewers compared to 8.19 million the previous season (2021-22). The show also saw an increase in its adult 18-49 demographic rating, rising from 1.59 to 2.05. As Noah Hawley told Deadline recently, it was a very successful season.
Unlike many TV shows that lose viewers over time, The Rookie has actually gained popularity. It’s become a hit on TikTok, attracting a younger audience. Nielsen data shows the show finished the season as the top broadcast drama for adults aged 18-34 and the most-watched series overall among teenagers aged 12-17.
The Rookie Is Getting a New Spinoff
In the TV show The Rookie, Nathan Fillion plays John Nolan, a 45-year-old man from Pennsylvania who decides to become a police officer in Los Angeles. As the oldest new recruit at the LAPD, Nolan faces the challenges and risks that come with the job after graduating from the Police Academy.
In 2027, The Rookie will expand with a new spinoff called The Rookie: North. The series will feature Jay Ellis as Alex Holland, a new police officer who joins the Pierce County Police Department in Washington after experiencing a home invasion. He’s the oldest rookie the department has ever had.
Following a promising test run earlier this month, a new series called North is coming as a second spinoff of The Rookie. The Rookie: Feds was the first spinoff, but it only lasted one season, airing from September 2022 to May 2023. The initial season of North will have 10 episodes, with one or two of them…
The Rookie is available to stream on Hulu.
