Fantasy entertainment is hugely popular, as seen with successful franchises like The Lord of the Rings, How to Train Your Dragon, and Harry Potter. This month brought the return of Game of Thrones with its prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, suggesting Westeros will remain a popular world for years to come. However, another promising fantasy project hasn’t been so lucky, and recent news from a potential director indicates it may not move forward.
Tim Miller, the director behind Deadpool, was once set to bring Joe Abercrombie’s popular novel, Best Served Cold, to life as a live-action series. The project, initially with Paramount and starring Rebecca Ferguson (who Miller felt was perfectly cast), unfortunately fell through. Miller recently stated he doesn’t believe it will ever be made, explaining he enjoys the creative control of large-scale projects but has seen several promising films get canceled for various reasons. Best Served Cold was one of those projects that, despite a strong start at Skydance, ultimately didn’t move forward.
What Could Have Been For Best Served Cold
Okay, let’s talk about Best Served Cold. If you’re unfamiliar, it exists within what fans call “The First Law Trilogy” – though it’s actually a separate story that doesn’t directly follow the events of those books. Those three – The Blade Itself, Before They Are Hanged, and Last Argument of Kings – haven’t been officially greenlit for adaptation, but honestly, if Best Served Cold does well, I’m betting we’d see this world expand onto the big screen. It’s a rich universe, and this feels like a potential gateway for more stories.
Tim Miller is officially directing the film, and Rebecca Ferguson – known for her work in shows like Silo and movies like Dune, Doctor Sleep, and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation – was cast as the lead. Miller previously described the planned movie as a blend of Game of Thrones and Kill Bill, an ambitious combination. Although the project was ultimately cancelled, the merger between Paramount and Skydance is believed to have played a significant role in its demise.
Here’s what Best Served Cold is about: The story takes place in Styria, where a long and brutal war has been raging for nineteen years. Duke Orso and the League of Eight are locked in a fierce conflict, devastating the land. While armies clash and cities burn, powerful figures behind the scenes are manipulating events, all vying for control of the kingdom.
For Monza Murcatto, a notorious and highly successful mercenary known as the Snake of Talins, war isn’t just brutal – it’s profitable. Her popularity, however, has become a problem for Duke Orso, who has now betrayed her. Left for dead and severely injured, Murcatto is consumed by a desire for revenge and is determined to hunt down the seven men responsible, no matter the consequences.
