Season two of Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake is showing Fionna and Cake adjusting to life after saving the universe. They’re enjoying the praise for stopping a planet-threatening disaster. The new season, now available on HBO Max, finds things largely returning to normal in the Land of Oooo, though some familiar voices have changed. Showrunner Adam Muto recently explained the decision to recast two beloved characters and how the team handled the transition.
As a huge Adventure Time fan, I was definitely curious about how things changed when Donald Glover and Jenny Slate moved on from their roles as Marshall Lee and the Huntress Wizard. Now Kris Kollins and Ashly Burch are voicing them, and it’s interesting to hear how the team is handling it. They’re walking a really cool line – wanting to honor what made those characters special while also letting the new actors bring their own unique energy to the parts. I was wondering if the director encourages Kris and Ashly to put their own spin on things, or if they’re mostly asked to sound like Donald and Jenny did before.
Muto explained that they didn’t want the actors simply imitating the original voices of the characters. He felt it would be unfair to ask someone to maintain an impression over many episodes, and it wouldn’t feel genuine. Instead, they cast actors who had a similar energy, but encouraged them to create their own unique interpretations of the roles. They prioritized finding actors who could make the characters their own, rather than just mimicking Jenny Slate or Donald Glover.
The Land of Ooooo Changes

Muto explained the approach to casting and working with the voice actors. Because these were already well-known characters, they didn’t want actors to completely reinvent them, but also didn’t want them to simply copy the original voices. It was a balancing act. They generally avoided direct imitations, as that’s been done in other shows, and instead aimed for something unique yet familiar – like Harvey Guillen’s take on Gary, which feels distinct but still fits the character’s world.
Instead of making the entire second season of Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake available at once, HBO Max will release new episodes each week. The show has already started with a difficult situation for Fionna, Cake, and even Finn, suggesting the spin-off will explore some surprising and unpredictable storylines.
