Video games are now a massive part of how people entertain themselves. Recently, popular games like *Minecraft* and *The Last of Us* have been turned into successful movies and TV shows. And now, another game is joining that list, after being in development for twenty years.
Fans of the *Splinter Cell* video game series can finally watch its first-ever screen adaptation! *Splinter Cell: Deathwatch*, an animated series now streaming on Netflix, premiered on October 13th. Based on the popular video game franchise that launched in 2002 and released eight games through 2013, the series features Liev Schreiber voicing Sam Fisher, a renowned agent who is called back to action when a rookie operative needs his assistance.
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Adaptation Was a Long Time Coming
It took over twenty years to bring a movie adaptation of the popular *Splinter Cell* video game series to life. Development began as early as 2005, and by 2012, Tom Hardy was set to star as Sam Fisher with a script by Eric Warren Singer. Director Doug Liman (*Edge of Tomorrow*) joined in 2014, but the project stalled. After ten years stuck in development, facing changes in personnel and creative issues, the movie was officially canceled in 2024. Producer Basil Iwanyk explained that problems with the script and budget ultimately led to the film’s demise, calling it a project that never came to fruition.
The story of adapting *Splinter Cell* didn’t stop there. In 2020, Netflix announced plans for an animated series based on the popular video game. This project was a natural fit for Netflix, which had already found success with animated adaptations of video games like *Castlevania* and *Arcane*, and was becoming known for consistently producing high-quality, critically acclaimed shows based on video game properties.
Other New TV Shows Now on Netflix
Netflix added several shows to its lineup in October, including the new TV series *Splinter Cell: Deathwatch*. This joins other recent additions like the *Halo* adaptation (both seasons), seasons 18 and 19 of *NCIS*, and seasons 1 and 2 of *The Way Home*. Viewers can also now stream all seven seasons of *Nurse Jackie*, the documentary series *True Haunting*, and Ryan Murphy’s *Monster: The Ed Gein Story*.
