After 3 Years, Netflix’s Crime Thriller Series From Hit Franchise Returns As No.1 Streaming Sensation

Netflix‘s returning crime thriller series steals the streamer’s top spot.

A large part of what you can watch on Netflix are original series, and many of these have grown into big franchises. For example, Stranger Things now includes an animated spin-off and other shows in the works, Bridgerton has a limited spin-off series, and Squid Game led to a reality show competition. Now, a returning crime thriller series – a genre that’s consistently popular on Netflix – has found success again after being off the air for several years.

Netflix’s newest crime thriller, Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine, is now the most popular show on the platform globally, according to FlixPatrol. It’s a spin-off of the hit series Money Heist (also known as La Casa de Papel), which first premiered in 2017. This is the second limited series starring Pedro Alonso as Berlin, following the original show’s conclusion, and comes after the first Berlin-focused series, Berlin And The Jewels Of Paris, released on December 29, 2023. Like its predecessor, this series centers around an elaborate heist.

Netflix’s new series, Berlin, is performing very well, landing in 2nd place on the platform’s global charts. Released on May 15th as a spin-off of Money Heist, it’s already ahead of popular shows like The WONDERfools, Legends, Devil May Cry, Man on Fire, and The Chestnut Man. Currently trending in 88 countries, Berlin proves that audiences are still excited about the world of Money Heist even after a long wait for new content.

The new Berlin series has become a huge hit for Netflix, reaching the top 10 in over 54 countries, including Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. While it’s not currently the most-watched show overall, Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine is the 9th most popular series on Netflix in the United States, proving its strong performance. It’s even more popular than Between Father and Son. Currently, Nemesis is the top show on Netflix in the US, followed by La Brea, Man on Fire, and other trending titles.

The critics’ score for Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine hasn’t been released on Rotten Tomatoes yet, but currently there are two negative reviews. Marta Medina Pérez of mundoCine points out the irony that the new Berlin series feels surprisingly uninspired. Juan Pablo Russo, writing for EscribiendoCine, argues that adding more plotlines and characters doesn’t help a show that was already facing difficulties. As of now, Netflix hasn’t announced whether there will be a third season.
