After 44 Years, We Finally Know Why He-Man Has “The Power of Grayskull”

Like many kids who grew up in the 1980s, I was a huge fan of Masters of the Universe. It’s funny to think the show started as basically a long commercial for the toys, but it actually did really well, lasting two years and producing an impressive 130 episodes. The appeal was strong – the idea that a shy prince like Adam could become the most powerful hero with just a sword and a magic phrase was incredibly exciting.

Everyone remembers He-Man’s famous catchphrase, “By the power of Grayskull!” He protected Castle Grayskull, a place filled with incredible magical energy, from villains like Skeletor and Hordak. But I’ve always been curious about the castle itself – where did the name “Grayskull” actually come from?

The True Origin of Grayskull Has Finally Been Revealed

The third issue of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: The Sword of Flaws, by Tim Seeley, Andrew Dalhouse, and Freddie E. Williams II, delves into the hidden past of He-Man. A new, enigmatic Power Sword has been found in the Cairn of Pantheons mountains, and both He-Man and Skeletor are in a desperate race to claim it. At the same time, the Sorceress and Orko are on their own quest, traveling to Eternia’s distant past to uncover the sword’s origins, a journey that leads them to witness the very founding of Grayskull.

We’re now seeing the clearest picture yet of “Preternia,” the distant past of Eternia. This was a time when the world’s most powerful leaders – called the Quadrant of Powers – met to govern. Worried that technology would overshadow magic, the sorcerers of that era devised a plan. Eldor, who protected the Book of Living Spells and practiced light magic, asked a pioneering scientist and engineer named Gray to build a fortress. Eldor described it to the Quadrant of Powers as “an unbreakable stronghold to house all the magical wisdom of our ancestors, within its impressive walls.”

The leaders of Preternia all agreed to the plan, and Castle Grayskull was built. However, the Snake Men betrayed them, realizing they could seize the castle’s power for themselves. This led to the devastating “Great Wars” between the forces of the castle and the Snake Men, resulting in the loss of many historical documents. Interestingly, the original builder of the castle, Gray, bears a striking resemblance to He-Ro, the first hero to defeat the Snake Men and use the castle’s power.

The Sword of Flaws Was a Failsafe for the Power of Gray’s Skull

The purple Sword, called the Sword of Flaws, was created as a safety measure for the immense power of Gray’s Skull. Gray believed magic was stronger than science and worried about the danger of concentrating all magical power in one place. He explained that the combined knowledge of all magic throughout history was incredibly powerful, capable of great good or terrible destruction. The Sword of Flaws, whose full abilities remain a mystery, was his answer to the potential threat posed by Gray’s Skull.

It’s deeply ironic that Skeletor wields the purple Power Sword. He’s constantly trying to seize the power of Grayskull for his wicked plans, yet he’s using a weapon specifically designed to prevent someone like him from succeeding. Regardless of its abilities, the Sword of Flaws is something he shouldn’t possess. He’s essentially turned Grayskull’s built-in protection into a dangerous weapon against the Masters of the Universe.

It’s going to be really interesting to see where the story of The Sword of Flaws goes. But one thing is clear: the writing has finally explained a mystery that’s been around since I was a kid. We now know why He-Man has the power of Grayskull – it’s actually the power from Gray’s Skull, a structure built by Gray, one of the earliest scientists and builders in Preternia.
