It’s been more than ten years since the movie Sharknado first thrilled (and terrified!) audiences with its story of sharks raining down on Los Angeles thanks to a waterspout. Though the series supposedly ended in 2018, it’s not over yet! This time, instead of continuing the story, we’re going back to explore the origins of these wild creature features.
A seventh Sharknado movie is reportedly in the works, according to Variety. Director Anthony Ferrante will be back at the helm. While no cast members have been confirmed yet, fans shouldn’t necessarily expect to see Ian Ziering and Tara Reid reprise their roles as Fin and April. The new film, titled Sharknado Origins, will explore the very beginning of the bizarre shark-filled tornadoes.
Sharknado Origins Will Combine Young Love and Airborne Predators

Sharknado Origins will tell the story of how Fin and April first met, before the events of the original Sharknado in 2013. The movie shows them as teenagers enjoying a summer romance at the beach, but their idyllic time is interrupted when a huge waterspout forms and sharks start falling from the sky, just as Fin is about to propose to April.
Sharknado Origins will serve as a prequel to the series, but it’s expected to be different from 2018’s The Last Sharknado. That earlier film used time travel, sending Fin and his friends back in time to try and stop the first Sharknado. It ended by creating an alternate timeline without Sharknados, so it will be interesting to see how Sharknado Origins explains things, if at all.
Whether Sharknado Origins simply serves as a backstory or truly connects to the other Sharknado movies, it has a good chance of being successful. The original Sharknado was surprisingly well-received by both critics and audiences, and the sequel did well too. While later films in the series weren’t as popular, the franchise has a dedicated fanbase, and revisiting the very beginning could be exactly the kind of enjoyably cheesy entertainment people want.
