After 8-Year Absence, a Major Marvel Star — Luke Cage — Teases His MCU Return

Great news for fans of the Marvel shows that originally appeared on Netflix! In the mid-2010s, the Daredevil series and its spin-offs – including Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and Marvel’s The Defenders – delivered some of the most compelling superhero stories. While the new Daredevil: Born Again is coming to Disney+ in March 2026, one important element from the original series is still missing.

Charlie Cox, who plays Daredevil, is just as excited as fans to see Krysten Ritter reprise her role as Jessica Jones in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. However, many are wondering what’s happening with Luke Cage. Even Mike Colter, the actor who played Luke Cage, has been publicly asking Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios to bring his character back into the mix, hoping to see Harlem’s hero get some attention.

After a long period of silence, Colter and Marvel are finally making progress on what appears to be the long-awaited revival of the third Defender.

You know, I’ve definitely been talking with people about potentially revisiting the role, and I’ll just leave it at that for now. Honestly, I used to be completely against it. I really enjoyed my time as Luke Cage, and I’m grateful for the fans and that whole world, but I’m an actor, and I want to explore different roles. When the initial run finished, I was ready to move on and try something new.

Colter explained he’s been considering a return to his role, and feels the timing is right now that Daredevil and Jessica Jones are both back. He’s been in talks with the original Luke Cage creator and showrunner, Cheo Hodari Coker, and realized he has some lingering goals he’d like to achieve with the character. He feels it’s time to revisit that world.

Luke Cage Is Returning to Join Daredevil, Jessica Jones … Finally?

That’s great news! Unlike the poorly received Iron Fist, everyone agrees that Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Daredevil are all excellent. Luke Cage would fit perfectly into the current Daredevil storyline, which involves Matt Murdock battling Wilson Fisk (Kingpin) and Vanessa, as well as Bullseye—especially since Daredevil recently took a bullet for Fisk—and a new danger that threatens everyone.

With a fresh season of Jessica Jones and Jon Bernthal reprising his role as the Punisher in the new Marvel movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day – following his appearance in Season 1 of Daredevil: Born Again – many fans believe it’s time for Luke Cage, Jessica Jones’ sometimes-partner, to return to screens. He’s remained popular with audiences since his first appearance.

Colter seemed optimistic, saying, “We’re likely to see things move forward more quickly than expected.” He added with a smile that while he hadn’t offered any encouragement before, he was now starting to feel hopeful.

Colter just delivered a much-needed boost of optimism, after a long period of uncertainty for the character, known for being a resilient hero. The show also featured a fantastic cast including Alfre Woodard, Rosario Dawson, and Mahershala Ali, who will soon be playing Blade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s starting to seem like Disney and Marvel are finally recognizing the quality and impact of the Netflix Marvel shows.

The original Luke Cage series and Marvel’s The Defenders are currently streaming on Disney+.
