Agatha Christie is famous for writing a huge number of murder mystery novels. Throughout her career, from 1921 to 1976, she created seventy-four novels, along with numerous short stories and plays. While many know her detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, she also featured another successful investigating pair in a series of books: Tommy and Tuppence.
Tommy and Tuppence are a pair of characters featured in four novels and a collection of short stories by Agatha Christie. They first appeared in The Secret Adversary in 1922, shortly after her first published novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles. Interestingly, they also star in Agatha Christie’s final novel, Postern of Fate, which hasn’t yet been adapted for film or television.
Tommy and Tuppence Are a Fun and Exciting Investigative Duo
While characters like Hercule Poirot are distinctive and Miss Marple is known for her quiet demeanor, Tommy and Tuppence allowed Agatha Christie to create more daring and thrilling protagonists. Thomas Beresford and his wife, Prudence – known as Tommy and Tuppence – debuted in Christie’s second novel, The Secret Adversary, where they established themselves as “The Young Adventurers, Ltd.”
In The Secret Adversary, Tommy and Tuppence are young friends, not yet married, and both are out of work and eager for excitement. Uniquely, they grow older throughout the series, beginning as twenty-somethings in The Secret Adversary and reaching their seventies by Postern of Fate.
According to the official Agatha Christie website, Tommy and Tuppence were her favorite characters to write. This isn’t surprising, considering Christie often expressed mixed feelings about Hercule Poirot, her most famous creation – she both loved and, at times, disliked him.
Ariadne Oliver is a character who assists Poirot in several stories. She’s a crime writer and, in many ways, represents Agatha Christie herself. Ariadne frequently complains about the popular detective she invented – a character she dislikes – which mirrors Christie’s own feelings about Poirot.
Tommy and Tuppence gave Christie the chance to create more playful and exciting characters. While Tommy tended to be the more serious and level-headed of the pair, Tuppence’s lively and spontaneous nature led to plenty of fun and adventurous moments for both of them. Their romantic relationship also became a key element throughout the series.
Tommy and Tuppence begin their adventures as friends in The Secret Adversary, but they fall in love and get married before the novel ends. The series continues to follow their life together, showing them grow older with each story. By the final book, Postern of Fate, they are both in their seventies.
Postern of Fate Sees Tommy and Tuppence Tackling a Cold Case
In Postern of Fate, Tommy and Tuppence even buy a house in a seaside town, and it’s there that their next mystery begins. Along with the house came the previous owner’s books, and Tuppence discovers a curious message hidden inside one of them, launching a new investigation for the pair.
Tuppence discovered a message hidden in a book stating that Mary Jordan’s death wasn’t accidental – someone among them was responsible, and the writer believed they knew who. When Tuppence searched for Mary Jordan’s grave, she unexpectedly found the grave of Alexander Parkinson, a fourteen-year-old boy, who turned out to be the author of the note.
Tuppence starts researching the history of their house and the people who lived there before them. She discovers that Mary used to work as a governess for the Parkinsons. Officially, Mary died in an accident – it was reported she accidentally ate poisonous leaves in her salad. However, after finding a mysterious note, Tommy and Tuppence suspect something else happened.
The investigators began interviewing locals who knew the Parkinsons and Mary while she worked for them. They discovered details surrounding Mary’s death and learned she had secretly been working on a government project to build a new submarine.
Tommy served in World War I, and the novel The Secret Adversary begins with his return and reunion with Tuppence. His wartime experiences and contacts prove useful as they investigate Mary, discovering she wasn’t simply an assistant, but a British spy.
As Tommy and Tuppence get closer to uncovering the truth, the situation becomes increasingly perilous. Someone sends a clear warning by murdering their gardener, urging them to stop their investigation. The danger escalates further when Tuppence is shot in the shoulder while walking their dog, Hannibal, though thankfully the injury isn’t fatal.
Postern of Fate takes place around the time of World War I. Mary discovered evidence of a hidden group working against the government, but she was murdered before she could reveal what she found.
There Have Been Many Tommy and Tuppence Adaptations
Although Postern of Fate hasn’t been made into a movie, play, or radio show, several of Agatha Christie’s other Tommy and Tuppence adventures have been adapted for the screen. James Warwick and Francesca Annis were the first to play Tommy and Tuppence in the 1982 film The Secret Adversary, and they later reprised their roles in the 1983 ten-part miniseries Agatha Christie’s Partners in Crime.
The story Partners in Crime is part of a collection by Agatha Christie with the same name. In 2015, a TV series featuring Tommy and Tuppence aired, with David Walliams and Jessica Raine in the lead roles. Although named after the short story collection, the series actually adapted the novels The Secret Adversary and N or M?.
French director Pascal Thomas adapted Agatha Christie’s By the Pricking of My Thumbs, the third book featuring detectives Tommy and Tuppence, releasing it as Mon petit doigt m’a dit… This was the second film adaptation starring the duo.
As a big fan of classic mysteries, I always found the ITV series Agatha Christie’s Marple – the one with Geraldine McEwan and later Julia McKenzie – a really enjoyable take on the stories. They adapted By the Pricking of My Thumbs, but with a clever twist! Instead of focusing on Tommy and Tuppence as the main investigators, they paired Miss Marple with Tuppence, as Tommy was conveniently away. It was a fun change and still captured the spirit of Christie’s work.
The Upcoming Tommy and Tuppence Series Could Finally Bring Postern of Fate to the Screen
A fresh take on the classic Tommy and Tuppence stories is being filmed, with actors playing Tuppence and Josh Dylan, known from Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, as Tommy. Although details are scarce about which books will be featured, the new series will be set in the present day.
The classic story typically features actors in their twenties and thirties. However, a new adaptation could be interesting if it used different actors to portray Tommy and Tuppence at various points in their lives.
A series following Tommy and Tuppence throughout their entire lives – from their adventurous twenties to their retirement in a resort town – would be really compelling. Plus, many fans are eager to finally see an adaptation of Agatha Christie’s last novel.
Although published a year before Agatha Christie’s death, Postern of Fate wasn’t intended as her last book. Christie had actually completed the final novels featuring Poirot and Miss Marple in the 1940s, preparing them in case of her unexpected death. Sleeping Murder, the last Miss Marple mystery, appeared several months after Christie passed away in 1976.
Christie may have revisited Tommy and Tuppence one final time to give these beloved characters, who grew alongside her throughout her life, a fitting farewell. Many fans hope to see this story adapted for film or television as a tribute to Christie and her most cherished creations.
