Star Wars fans have had a lot to enjoy this spring, with the successful first season of the animated series Maul – Shadow Lord and the upcoming theatrical release of The Mandalorian and Grogu. More content is planned for later this year, including the second season of the live-action show Star Wars: Ahsoka. While many have predicted its return in 2026, no official release date was known. Now, Dave Filoni, co-president of Lucasfilm, has provided an update on the status of Ahsoka.
While on the red carpet at the season finale of Maul – Shadow Lord, Dave Filoni spoke with Screen Rant about Ahsoka. He revealed he’s been editing all the episodes simultaneously, and hinted at a release timeframe, playfully saying, “I’m not saying, but I might know.” He explained that each show deserves its proper debut, and right now, the focus is on Maul.
Filoni addressed the possibility of a third season of Ahsoka, saying that while anything is possible, he has a clear vision for how the story concludes. He enjoys seeing fan theories, but is currently focused on what’s happening with the show now, as well as other projects like Maul and Mando. He finds all of it very exciting.
When Ahsoka Season 2 Could Premiere (And Will There Be a Season 3?)

It looks like fans will likely have to wait several months for the second season of Ahsoka to premiere. Dave Filoni’s comment about letting each project have its time suggests that the focus is now shifting to The Mandalorian and Grogu. As the first new Star Wars movie in seven years, Lucasfilm will be heavily promoting it leading up to and during its time in theaters. The marketing campaign has already been running for months, with the latest trailer shown at CinemaCon in April. The Mandalorian and Grogu is probably the most significant Star Wars project this year, and Lucasfilm will be dedicating most of its resources to it for the foreseeable future.
The first season of Ahsoka came out in August 2023, and it’s likely the second season will follow suit this year. This would give The Mandalorian and Grogu most of the summer to attract audiences, letting Lucasfilm concentrate on promoting its new film first. While projections for The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s box office aren’t incredibly high for a Star Wars movie (though the lower budget helps), it needs a strong start to reach a wider audience. By July, the film’s success will be clear, and Lucasfilm can then fully focus on promoting the next season of Ahsoka.
It’s currently unclear if Ahsoka will get a third season. Disney seems to be rethinking its strategy, focusing more on releasing movies in theaters than creating new shows for streaming platforms, believing streaming growth has slowed. While Ahsoka Season 2 is the last live-action Star Wars show currently planned, a new Star Wars film, Starfighter, is scheduled for next year, with several other movies in the works. Disney isn’t giving up on streaming entirely, but whether Ahsoka continues beyond Season 2 will be their decision.
Originally, Season 2 of Ahsoka was intended as a bridge to a larger movie project from Dave Filoni – a film that would have wrapped up many of the storylines from The Mandalorian and related shows, similar to Endgame in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, plans shifted. Season 4 of The Mandalorian was canceled, and updates on Filoni’s movie have been scarce. With Filoni now a co-president at Lucasfilm, he may not have time to direct the film. It’s possible he changed the focus of Ahsoka Season 2 to resolve the storyline involving Grand Admiral Thrawn.
