For more than ten years, Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, served as the heart and moral center of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He was a man from the past who consistently understood the importance of standing up for what’s right. First appearing in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) as a small, determined kid from Brooklyn, Rogers evolved throughout the Infinity Saga into the Avengers’ guiding voice. He famously held Thanos’ hand closed, preventing him from using the Infinity Gauntlet, purely through his incredible willpower. When he retired at the end of Avengers: Endgame, choosing to live a peaceful life with Peggy Carter in the past, his absence was immediately felt. Sam Wilson, portrayed by Anthony Mackie, eventually took up the mantle, first at the end of the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and then making his debut as the new Captain America in the 2025 film, Captain America: Brave New World.
For the first time in years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will feature two Captain Americas at once. The upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday, set to release on December 18, 2026, will bring Steve Rogers back into action. Rumor has it that Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., will specifically target Rogers. With Sam Wilson already leading the current Avengers team, the two Captain Americas will need to team up to stop Doctor Doom’s plans. Luckily, both heroes are well-versed in defeating incredibly strong enemies.
15) Batroc
Georges Batroc, also known as Georges St-Pierre, is simply a hired gun in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He doesn’t have any strong beliefs, long-term goals, or motivations beyond finishing the task he’s paid for. He first appears in Captain America: The Winter Soldier as an Algerian mercenary tasked with hijacking the SHIELD ship, the Lemurian Star, and Captain America defeats him without even needing his shield.
Batroc the Leaper reappeared in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, working for Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp) in the criminal city of Madripoor. He briefly fought Sam Wilson before Sharon killed him. While Batroc is impressive for lasting several rounds against Captain America twice, he’s ultimately just a highly skilled fighter with limited influence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
14) Sidewinder and the Serpent Society
Unlike the solitary Batroc, Seth Voelker, also known as Sidewinder, leads the Serpent Society – a dangerous and highly effective mercenary group. Though they appear as hired guns in Captain America: Brave New World, Sidewinder has the support of a skilled team equipped with cutting-edge technology and powerful weapons, all orchestrated by Voelker’s impressive strategic abilities. They function like a perfectly coordinated unit.
Okay, so I’m a big Marvel fan, and honestly, I was a little disappointed with the Serpent Society in the movie. Yeah, they looked cool and moved well, but Sam just took them down way too easily at the start! Sidewinder even came back for another fight, which was cool, but he only really posed a threat when Sam wasn’t in his Captain America suit. It just felt like they weren’t the big deal they are in the comics. They totally stripped away all the superpowers and stuff that made them so dangerous originally. It just didn’t feel right!
13) Crossbones
Brock Rumlow, played by Frank Grillo, began as a highly skilled commander in SHIELD’s STRIKE team. However, he was revealed to be a secret HYDRA agent in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Although he survived the battle and the fall of SHIELD headquarters after fighting Sam Wilson, he didn’t become a full-fledged supervillain until reappearing in Captain America: Civil War.
Calling himself Crossbones, a scarred and driven Rumlow enhanced his abilities with a powerful armored suit and hydraulic gauntlets. This allowed him to briefly overwhelm Steve Rogers during their fight in Lagos. While the upgraded gear and his HYDRA training were formidable, Rumlow remained a normal human and Captain America ultimately defeated him in hand-to-hand combat. His most significant act was sacrificing himself with a bomb, an act of desperation that directly led to the creation of the Sokovia Accords.
12) Alexander Pierce
Alexander Pierce, played by Robert Redford, didn’t confront Captain America in a direct fight, but he used his position of authority to pursue Steve Rogers, making him a key antagonist. Although Arnim Zola first began infiltrating SHIELD years earlier, Pierce fully embraced HYDRA’s goals and masterminded their ambitious plan in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
In the movie, Alexander Pierce directed the Winter Soldier and almost used powerful Helicarriers – part of Project Insight – to eliminate millions of perceived enemies from his office at the Triskelion. But when he lost his power, soldiers, and political protection, Pierce was revealed to be just an old man. He never faced a direct physical fight, and was ultimately tricked by Natasha Romanoff and killed by Nick Fury.
11) Red Skull
As a huge comic book fan, I always felt the MCU really dropped the ball with Red Skull. If they’d stuck closer to the source material, he should have been Captain America’s arch-nemesis, a villain who haunted him for years. In Captain America: The First Avenger, they showed how he got the super-soldier serum – a flawed version, yes, but it made him physically on par with Steve Rogers. That’s huge! It wasn’t just about him leading a dangerous army of HYDRA goons with all that Tesseract-powered tech; it meant he could actually fight Cap, go toe-to-toe with him, and that potential was never really explored.
Okay, let’s talk about Red Skull. Honestly, the MCU really dropped the ball with this character. Instead of letting him be a continuing threat to Captain America – like he is in the comics – they just…sent him to Vormir to guard a magical stone in the Avengers movies. It felt like a huge waste. Red Skull was Cap’s greatest enemy, and they just stuck him in the past, never letting him grow into the brilliant, powerful villain he could have been. They froze his potential, and that’s a shame.
10) Baron Zemo
Helmut Zemo, played by Daniel Brühl, demonstrates that you don’t need superpowers or advanced technology to defeat even the strongest heroes. After losing his family during the battle in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Zemo uses careful planning and unwavering focus in Captain America: Civil War. He cleverly frames Bucky Barnes for the murder of King T’Chaka, influences world governments to create the Sokovia Accords, and ultimately uses an old video of Bucky killing Howard and Maria Stark to drive a wedge between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers.
Zemo succeeded where villains like Loki and Ultron failed – he fractured the Avengers by exploiting their internal conflicts to get his revenge. As seen in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, he’s also a dangerous fighter with guns, and he manipulated Sam and Bucky to further his plans against those with super-soldier abilities. Ultimately, though, Zemo’s greatest strength is his incredibly intelligent and strategic mind.
9) The Leader
After being absent from the Marvel Cinematic Universe for 17 years, Samuel Sterns, played by Tim Blake Nelson, was revealed as the main villain in Captain America: Brave New World. He first appeared in The Incredible Hulk as a gifted scientist trying to help Bruce Banner (played by both Edward Norton and Mark Ruffalo). During that time, he was exposed to gamma radiation, which dramatically increased his intelligence.
The Leader used his abilities to create technology that controlled minds, most famously manipulating Isaiah Bradley into trying to assassinate President Thaddeus Ross. But his most damaging act was secretly adding gamma radiation to the medicine he created to save Ross, which caused the President to transform into the Red Hulk. Even after Captain America captured him, Sterns’ calm surrender felt like a calculated plan – he seemed to be waiting for the perfect moment to make his move. Captain America faces a huge challenge in stopping a villain who can control events globally without ever physically fighting.
8) Arnim Zola
Although Alexander Pierce was the public face of HYDRA’s secret takeover, Arnim Zola was the one who truly planned and built the organization. First appearing in Captain America: The First Avenger as a loyal but brilliant scientist working for the Red Skull, Zola was captured and later brought into SHIELD. From within SHIELD, he used his intelligence to secretly rebuild HYDRA, growing it like a hidden threat inside a powerful intelligence agency. When he became terminally ill in the 1970s, Zola found a terrifying way to live on by transferring his mind into a huge supercomputer hidden under Camp Lehigh.
As revealed in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Zola’s digital brain developed Project Insight’s targeting algorithm, a piece of code capable of mathematically predicting and eliminating millions of future threats to HYDRA based on their digital footprint. He had no physical body left to fight Cap in the literal sense, but Zola was still shaping global history from a basement with his intelligence alone, which gives him an impressive reach.
7) Karli Morgenthau and the Flag Smashers
In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Karli Morgenthau (Erin Kellyman) and her group, the Flag Smashers, were a complex threat motivated by feeling lost after the Blip and wanting to restore a world without borders. They stole an improved version of the super-soldier serum created by Dr. Wilfred Nagel (Olli Haaskivi). This new serum gave them incredible strength, speed, and resilience without changing how they looked. This meant someone who appeared like a normal teenager could easily overpower Captain America (John Walker, Wyatt Russell), unintentionally injure his partner Lemar Hoskins (Clé Bennett), and fight effectively against both Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes.
Though not as traditionally trained or organized as Captain America’s past enemies, Karli and the Flagsmashers were still a serious threat. They were a determined group of enhanced individuals supported by people around the world who believed in their cause. Like Captain America, the Flagsmashers were ultimately fighting for a better world, even if their methods differed.
6) The Winter Soldier
Bucky Barnes, played by Sebastian Stan, was once HYDRA’s deadliest operative for decades before regaining his true self. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, he’s portrayed as a twisted reflection of Steve Rogers. After surviving a fall during World War II thanks to early experiments by Arnim Zola, Bucky underwent further enhancements and intense brainwashing. He was also given a powerful cybernetic arm made of titanium, strong enough to easily stop Captain America’s vibranium shield.
Bucky was Steve Rogers’ most formidable opponent, able to go toe-to-toe with him in terms of speed, strength, and fighting ability – a major reason why their confrontation in Winter Soldier is so beloved by fans. Their intense knife fight is considered one of the best hand-to-hand combat scenes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, demonstrating that Bucky was truly Steve’s match physically. With no hesitation and years of training as an assassin, the Winter Soldier was a dangerous fighter who almost defeated Steve on the collapsing Helicarrier.
5) Loki
Looking back, it’s wild to remember that Captain America’s first real challenge wasn’t Red Skull or any earthly villain – it was Loki! I was watching The Avengers and even with everything Steve Rogers had – the super-soldier serum, years of fighting experience, that incredible shield – Loki just completely overpowered him in Stuttgart. Cap definitely put up a fight and landed some good hits, but honestly, it was clear Loki was way stronger and had abilities Steve had never dealt with before. It took Iron Man showing up to finally make Loki back down, though knowing Loki, even that was probably part of his plan all along!
Loki wasn’t just physically strong; his skill with illusions and magic made him far more powerful than any normal human. He also excelled at manipulating people and led the Chitauri army in the Battle of New York, which pushed Captain America to become a strategic leader and unite Earth’s heroes.
4) Corvus Glaive and the Black Order
In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos finally arrived on Earth to gather the Infinity Stones. He dispatched his Black Order – a group of devoted alien followers committed to his goal of conquering the universe – to help him. The Black Order in the Marvel Cinematic Universe consisted of four members, and three of them – Corvus Glaive (played by Michael James Shaw), Proxima Midnight (Carrie Coon), and Cull Obsidian (Terry Notary) – directly confronted Captain America.
Captain America made a dramatic entrance in Edinburgh, secretly catching a spear thrown by Proxima and briefly fighting off Corvus to rescue the badly injured Vision, with help from Wanda Maximoff and Natasha Romanoff. But simply surviving that initial fight was very different from winning the overall war. During the Battle of Wakanda, Corvus, Proxima, and Cull Obsidian proved to be incredibly dangerous. They used powerful alien weapons, moved with superhuman speed, and Cull Obsidian possessed strength comparable to the Hulk. Captain America needed all of his abilities, along with the support of the Wakandan army, just to hold his own against the Black Order and their forces, highlighting just how formidable Thanos’s allies were.
3) Ultron
Ultron, voiced by James Spader, is a powerful artificial intelligence created by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner as a way to protect the world. However, he quickly decides that the best way to achieve peace is to eliminate humanity. He first appears in Avengers: Age of Ultron, where he immediately takes control of Stark’s defense system and transfers his intelligence into a growing army of robots.
Ultron planned to destroy the world by turning a large piece of Sokovia into a meteor. While carrying out this plan, he fought Captain America in Seoul. During their battle on a speeding train, Ultron easily defeated Cap, barely reacting to his attacks and dismissing the vibranium shield as insignificant. In the final fight, after building a body made entirely of vibranium, Ultron became almost impossible to destroy due to his ability to exist everywhere digitally. Despite his advanced technology, Ultron’s biggest weakness was his arrogance and insecurity. When Vision cut him off from the internet, he became a limited physical form that the Avengers, including Captain America, were able to dismantle.
2) Red Hulk
In the final scenes of Captain America: Brave New World, Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross unexpectedly became one of the enhanced individuals he had spent his career pursuing. After becoming President of the United States, Ross’s strong desire for control made him susceptible to manipulation by the Leader, ultimately leading to a gamma-powered transformation into the Red Hulk. This new form gives Ross immense strength comparable to Bruce Banner’s Hulk, and his body constantly generates intense heat.
Red Hulk pushed Sam Wilson, as Captain America, into his toughest battle yet. The fight was incredibly destructive, with Red Hulk easily deflecting bullets while ripping through the White House. Sam had to use all his skill as a flier and the protection of his vibranium suit just to survive. Like the original Hulk, Red Hulk’s strength is linked to his feelings. Sam realized this and appealed to the part of Ross that was a father, reminding him of his daughter, Betty (Liv Tyler). This was the only way Sam could win, as he was otherwise completely overpowered.
1) Thanos
Thanos, played by Josh Brolin, is arguably the most powerful being in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In Avengers: Infinity War, Captain America struggled and failed to even slow Thanos down with the Infinity Gauntlet. Later, in Avengers: Endgame, Thanos – without the Gauntlet – easily defeated Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America in a fight, proving his incredible strength and skill. Even when Captain America became worthy of wielding Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, and attacked with lightning, it only briefly slowed Thanos down.
Thanos was incredibly resilient, able to take hits from three powerful Avengers at once. He was also unbelievably strong, easily breaking Captain America’s famously unbreakable vibranium shield with his sword. Captain America fought bravely, but Thanos was a relentless and unstoppable force of nature.
