All 4 Seasons of an Unfairly Canceled DC Show are Streaming Completely Free

A fan-favorite show that was surprisingly canceled years ago is now available to watch for free on Tubi. While it’s wonderful to have it back, it’s still frustrating to remember how it ended – and the reasons behind the cancellation are just as upsetting now as they were in 2004.

The animated series Static Shock, based on the Milestone comic book, quickly became a hit with viewers. The show consistently ranked high in ratings, especially on Saturday mornings, and even received a Humanitas Award for its writing. It featured Phil Lamarr as the voice of Static, also known as Virgil Hawkins, a teenager who gained superpowers after an accident involving a science experiment. Using his ability to control electricity and magnetism, Static fought crime with the support of his friend, Osgood, who created gadgets to aid their efforts.

Static Shock Is One Show That Deserved Way More Time Than It Got

Static Shock wasn’t afraid to address difficult issues like gun violence, racism, and bullying, and it did so in a way that kids could easily grasp without simplifying the core message. As critic Sheraz Farooqi noted, the show fearlessly pushed boundaries for children’s television. This boldness is a big reason why fans still miss it. Creator Dwayne McDuffie envisioned Static Shock as a breakthrough, hoping it would open doors for more diverse representation in the superhero genre.

The cancellation of the show ultimately came down to merchandise. Actor Phil Lamarr explained in an interview that the toy company they approached didn’t believe there was enough market demand for toys based on the characters. Essentially, the show – considered by many to be one of the best animated series ever – was canceled due to concerns about potential toy sales, even though those sales weren’t a sure thing. It’s particularly disappointing that a show which resonated with so many viewers was cut short over unconfirmed financial projections.
