With most major movie and TV studios now offering their own streaming services, it’s become much easier to find shows and movies that used to be difficult to access. When Disney+ launched, it included many classic Disney films never before available online, though even it didn’t have everything. And despite content moving away from platforms like Netflix, previously unavailable shows and movies still become available fairly often. This week, a highly requested show finally appeared online, but surprisingly, not on a service anyone expected.
HBO’s Tales From the Crypt, a hugely popular horror series that first aired in the ’90s, has largely faded from view for those without the original DVDs or VHS tapes. Based on classic 1950s EC Comics, the show was held back by complicated rights issues, making a revival difficult. However, Shudder has overcome these hurdles and is now streaming all episodes of the series for the first time, though the release has a slight complication.
Tales From the Crypt Now Streaming for the First Time Ever

Starting yesterday, May 1st, Shudder is now the only place to stream the classic horror series Tales From the Crypt. You won’t even find it on HBO Max! Shudder is releasing the seasons gradually, with Season 1 available now and new seasons dropping every Friday through June.
It remains to be seen how long Shudder will be able to stream Tales From the Crypt, as its instant popularity might prevent a license renewal and lead to it returning to HBO. This is a big win for Shudder – which faced fan backlash earlier this year after cancelling The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs – and for the horror genre overall, making this iconic series more accessible to viewers.
What makes Tales From the Crypt so great is that each episode tells a completely new story with a different cast. If you don’t enjoy one, you can easily skip to the next! With 93 episodes over seven seasons, the show features a ton of recognizable actors – from horror legends like Brad Dourif, Lance Henriksen, and Tim Curry, to major stars such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Brad Pitt, and Whoopi Goldberg. And it’s all tied together by the unforgettable John Kassir, who voices The Cryptkeeper and delivers funny introductions and endings to every story.
The show drew in a remarkable group of acclaimed directors, including Robert Zemeckis of Back to the Future, and horror masters like Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre), William Friedkin (The Exorcist), Richard Donner (The Omen, Superman), Tom Holland (Fright Night, Child’s Play), Mary Lambert (Pet Sematary), and Fred Dekker (Night of the Creeps, The Monster Squad). It featured a who’s who of both the horror genre and Hollywood in general, and was a truly unique television series – the kind rarely seen today.
It’s easy to forget just how incredibly popular Tales From the Crypt was when it originally aired, and how beloved the Cryptkeeper became. The show’s seven seasons weren’t limited to television – it also spawned two movies, released in 1995 and 1996, and even two albums, including a surprisingly festive Christmas record featuring the Cryptkeeper singing holiday classics.
The show’s popularity led to a spin-off cartoon called Tales from the Cryptkeeper, which aired for three seasons on Saturday mornings with less intense violence. There was also a kids’ game show, Secrets of the Cryptkeeper’s Haunted House, and John Kassir returned to play his famous character in both. When Tales From the Crypt ended, HBO tried to create another hit with the sci-fi series Perversions of Science, but it only lasted one season.
When Tales From the Crypt was hugely popular, both the show and its host were massive successes. Now that it’s available to stream again, a new audience can discover why it was so beloved. Many of us have been eagerly waiting for its return!
