Recent layoffs and budget cuts at Amazon, driven by investments in artificial intelligence, have left many wondering what projects would be affected. Now, it appears even some of Amazon’s most popular franchises aren’t safe, as development of a Lord of the Rings game has reportedly hit a snag.
According to RockPaperShotgun, the long-awaited Lord of the Rings MMO has been canceled. A former employee of the project confirmed the news. This marks the second time a large-scale Lord of the Rings MMO has been scrapped before release.
Amazon Cancels New The Lord Of The Rings MMO
The Project Spanned The Events Of The Hobbit & Lord Of The Rings
Recent cuts at Amazon are impacting many parts of the company and will significantly affect projects that are currently being worked on. This unfortunately means the highly anticipated Lord of the Rings MMO has been canceled, marking the second time a similar project has been stopped before completion – the first cancellation stemmed from disagreements during contract talks.
I was really bummed to see a post from someone who worked at Amazon Games saying they were laid off, along with a lot of other talented people working on both New World and the new Lord of the Rings game. She said the LOTR game would have been something players would have loved, and that everyone on the team was just incredibly skilled, creative, and a genuinely good group of people. It’s a real shame, and the post has since been taken down.
The planned game would have covered the stories of both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, offering a large, continuously online world for players to explore. This news is likely disappointing, but not surprising, for those hoping for an open-world online role-playing game set in Middle-earth.
The Lord Of The Rings MMOs May Be Cursed
It Doesn’t Look Like A LOTR MMO Is Going To Happen Anytime Soon
Okay, so a Lord of the Rings MMO would’ve been massive, and honestly, it could have been Amazon Games’ first real big win. But it looks like they’ve decided that’s not the way they want to go with Lord of the Rings games. They’re moving away from making those big, persistent online worlds altogether, which is a little disappointing if you were hoping for one.
Honestly, it’s a real bummer for us Lord of the Rings fans. It doesn’t look like we’ll be getting another video game or MMO anytime soon, and I’m not sure if one will ever happen. At least when it comes to Amazon Games, the future of Lord of the Rings games doesn’t seem too bright right now.
