Michael B. Jordan, who is producing the upcoming TV series, recently shared exciting news about the Amazon MGM Studios adaptation of Fourth Wing. The show, based on Rebecca Yarros’ Empyrean book series, will center on Violet Sorrengail, a 20-year-old who trades her quiet life for the dangerous world of dragon-riding. Along the way, she’ll develop a romantic connection with the intriguing and defiant Xaden Riorson.
The popular “romantasy” book series is a huge commercial success – the third book, Onyx Storm, sold 2.7 million copies in its first week (according to The New York Times) when it was released in January 2025. Jordan’s production company, Outlier Society, is adapting the series for Amazon as a TV show, although the process hasn’t been without challenges.
The TV adaptation of Fourth Wing was initially announced in October 2023, shortly before the release of the second book in the Empyrean series. The show has experienced some behind-the-scenes changes, with Meredith Averill (Locke & Key) taking over as showrunner after Moira Walley-Beckett (Anne With an E) departed. As of now, no actors have been cast. However, Jordan, recently nominated for an Oscar for Sinners, told Deadline that the series promises to be “exciting.”
Jordan promised fans an exciting show with both the elements they expect and some surprising new twists. He emphasized the team understands how much people love the franchise and are working hard to deliver something special. While still in the early stages of development, they’re fully aware of the passion surrounding the IP and are committed to meeting fans’ expectations.

Author Carissa Yarros, also an executive producer on the series, shared in January 2025 that she had reviewed two drafts of the script and was very pleased with them. These scripts were penned by former showrunner Meredith Walley-Beckett. It’s currently unknown how much progress has been made on the writing since Averill took over as showrunner in September 2025.
With excitement building for the Fourth Wing TV adaptation, fans are also hoping to hear about the fourth book in the Empyrean series. The series is planned to have five books in total. Author Rebecca Yarros took a break for health reasons after releasing Onyx Storm. She recently announced on Instagram that she’s currently writing a separate, contemporary romance novel before she returns to Violet’s story.
In recent years, very few fantasy novels have captured readers’ imaginations quite like Rebecca Yarros’s Fourth Wing. While fans eagerly await the next book and the upcoming TV adaptation, it’s reassuring to know that both Yarros and Jordan are committed to faithfully bringing Violet and Xaden’s story to life, both in print and on screen.
The Fourth Wing TV show has not yet officially been ordered to series.
