Sitcoms are a TV staple, providing familiar and comforting entertainment – think of classics like I Love Lucy from the 1950s and Seinfeld from the 1990s. Now, a beloved sitcom from the 2000s that originally ran for seven seasons on Fox is returning with a new series on Hulu.
Everyone remembers Malcolm in the Middle, the hilarious and energetic sitcom that defined the 2000s. It stood out by showing a realistic, and sometimes tough, side of everyday American family life. Now, it’s back! Hulu recently premiered Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair on April 10th. Created by the original showrunner, Linwood Boomer, the revival brings back Frankie Muniz as Malcolm, now grown up. He’s pulled back into the craziness of his family when his parents, Hal and Lois, insist he attend their 40th wedding anniversary party after years of not speaking. You can watch all four episodes now, as Hulu released them all at once.
Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair Was Worth the 20-Year Wait
The original Malcolm in the Middle was a huge success when it aired on Fox from 2000 to 2006, earning critical praise – including seven Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award – and a dedicated fanbase (currently boasting a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes). With the rise of reboots and remakes in the mid-2010s, many hoped the show would return. After a 20-year wait, it finally has, and it’s proving to be worth it. The revival, Life’s Unfair, launched with an 80% “Certified Fresh” score from critics, successfully capturing the same chaotic and energetic spirit that made the original series so popular.
Adam Miller of Metro UK praised the Life’s Unfair reboot, calling it a model for how to successfully revive a beloved show. The series captures the original’s fun, chaotic energy – including its slapstick humor and playful breaking of the fourth wall – without becoming overly sappy. It revisits the family twenty years later, welcoming back original stars Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek alongside new characters like Keeley Karsten’s Leah, Malcolm’s daughter.
Will There Be a Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair Season 2?
A second season of Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is probably not going to happen. The show was always planned as a short, four-episode miniseries, and it’s currently streaming now. However, initial reactions are positive, with many reviewers saying it provides a satisfying ending for fans.
