An Iconic ’90s Sitcom Character Actually Crossed Over With 3 Other Shows, Creating a Shared Universe

Steve Urkel became a huge star thanks to Family Matters, but he also appeared in several other ‘90s comedies, creating a whole world of characters around him. It’s not uncommon for sitcom characters to become famous beyond their original show – Joey from Friends got his own series, and even people who don’t follow The Big Bang Theory would probably recognize Sheldon Cooper, played by Jim Parsons.

While those later characters were memorable, none were as iconic as Jaleel White’s Urkel from the 1990s. Urkel started as a single-episode guest character on Family Matters, playing the nerdy neighbor of the Winslow family. Though Carl Winslow was originally meant to be the show’s main character, Urkel quickly became much more popular, essentially becoming the lead of Family Matters. And his popularity didn’t stop there – Urkel even appeared on other popular sitcoms of the time.

Steve Urkel Also Existed In Full House Step By Step and Boy Meets World

While Family Matters was a hugely popular sitcom in the ’80s, the character of Urkel became so beloved that he appeared on other shows. He guest-starred on Full House in season 4, episode 16, titled “Stephanie Gets Framed,” where he connected with Stephanie (played by Jodie Sweetin) as she got used to wearing glasses. The storyline explained that Urkel was a cousin of one of DJ’s friends, making his appearance fit into the show.

Jaleel White, famous for his role as Urkel on the popular ‘80s sitcom Family Matters, boosted his career by appearing on a top ‘90s sitcom, Step by Step. The second episode of Step by Step‘s first season, “The Dance,” was a special crossover event with Family Matters, capitalizing on White’s popularity. The Family Matters episode right before this crossover ended with Urkel hilariously launching himself out of the Winslows’ house using a rocket pack.

The crossover event kicked off with Urkel unexpectedly appearing in the backyard of the Lambert-Foster family from Step by Step. He then cheered up their heartbroken daughter before the school dance and assisted their son with a science project. But the connections didn’t stop there! Urkel also sent a chain letter to Cory Matthews, the main character of Boy Meets World, and Cory later confirmed receiving it on his show, creating a link between the two series.

Urkel’s Pop Culture Footprint Went Way Further Than Family Matters

As a long-time fan, it always felt like Boy Meets World existed in the same world as Family Matters – and even Full House and Step by Step! That little crossover made it pretty clear. It was so cool to see Urkel pop up again years later, first in the animated movie Urkel Saves Santa and then on the Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? reboot. It’s amazing how this character from Family Matters unexpectedly became the link connecting so many of my favorite family shows across decades!
