Video games and horror have always been a great combination, so it’s not surprising that many scary games are becoming movies. We’ve already seen adaptations of popular franchises like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Five Nights at Freddy’s, and Until Dawn with varying degrees of success. Now, a new horror property is heading to theaters – The Mortuary’s Assistant – and while it may not be as well-known as some other game adaptations, it has a dedicated fanbase eager to see how the creepy story translates to the big screen. The movie is coming out sooner than expected and promises to be just as frightening as the original game.
Epic Pictures and Dread will release the horror game Mortuary Assistant in theaters on February 13th. The story follows Rebecca Owens as she becomes caught up in a frightening supernatural experience. Players can influence the game’s ending by how they examine bodies. Though relatively short, the game gained popularity in 2022 with both streamers and players enjoying its creepy atmosphere. A new trailer has been released, along with insights from the CEO of Epic Pictures and the game’s creator.
The World of a Mortuary Assistant
Patrick Ewald, the producer of The Mortuary Assistant and CEO of Epic Pictures, shared details about bringing the game’s story to the big screen. He explained that they’re excited to adapt one of gaming’s scariest experiences into a truly immersive movie. The film will stay true to the game’s unsettling atmosphere, characters, and setting. They’re painstakingly recreating River Fields Mortuary as a physical set to maintain the game’s intense, claustrophobic feel and realistic horror. Ewald believes the result will be a terrifying and suspenseful movie experience that horror fans will love.
Brian Clarke, the creator of the game The Mortuary Assistant, shared his excitement about the upcoming movie adaptation. He said it was incredibly satisfying to see his creation come to life on film. He believes fans of the game will love seeing the world they know so well brought to the screen, and that new audiences will enjoy a tense, scary story with plenty of dark secrets. He envisions this adaptation as a way to connect fans of both the game and horror movies.
Although the first The Mortuary Assistant game was popular, a sequel hasn’t been announced yet. The creator, Clarke, has mentioned wanting to build upon the game’s world, so hopefully the new movie will lead to more stories being told in that universe.
