Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson Thriller ‘Verity’ Gets CinemaCon Trailer

Anne Hathaway is known for her dramatic roles and has an Academy Award to prove it, but she hasn’t appeared in many horror films. That’s about to change in 2026, as she’s starring in several genre movies. First up is the A24 film Mother Mary, and she’s also joining Ewan McGregor in the sci-fi movie The End of Oak Street. A trailer for another upcoming thriller, where she stars alongside Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, was recently shown at CinemaCon, building excitement for its release this year.

Since the movie Verity isn’t coming out until October, we don’t know exactly when the trailer will be released online. However, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed some early details. The trailer opens with Verity (Hathaway) promoting her book on a podcast. Then, it shows Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson) arriving at the mansion she shares with Verity’s husband, Jeremy Crawford (Hartnett). Lowen has been hired to finish one of Verity’s books, as the trailer indicates Verity is now unable to write and is confined to a wheelchair.

Lowen wonders if Verity is able to speak or even understand what happened, highlighting the extent of her injuries. While reading Verity’s old notes, Lowen imagines Verity confidently walking around their house. The tension escalates when Verity suddenly kisses Lowen, catching her completely off guard. Later, Lowen reveals her true intentions, declaring she intends to take Verity’s seemingly perfect life for herself.

Michael Showalter, known for comedies like The Big Sick and The Lovebirds, directed the film. He previously earned Oscar recognition for his 2021 biopic The Eyes of Tammy Faye, and he recently collaborated with Hathaway on the 2024 romantic comedy The Idea of You. The film is adapted from a novel by Colleen Hoover, a popular author whose work has also been turned into the movies It Ends With Us and Reminders of Him.

Though directors Hathaway and Showalter aren’t known for horror, actress Johnson has impressive credits like Suspiria and Wounds. Actor Hartnett, meanwhile, has been a popular face in the genre for two decades. He first gained recognition with films like Halloween H20: 20 Years Later and The Faculty, and later appeared in projects such as 30 Days of Night and Wicker Park. Many believe Hartnett is experiencing a career revival, especially after his role as a serial killer in Trap, which allowed him to demonstrate his acting range and attract more prominent roles.

Domestic thrillers are clearly popular, as shown by the success of last year’s The Housemaid. With its talented cast and crew, Verity is poised to be the next big hit in this genre.
