After years of rumors and shifting plans, a live-action movie based on the hugely popular video game Call of Duty is finally happening. Paramount Pictures appears to have found the right team, bringing on two well-known directors to make the film a reality, with a planned release in 2028.
Paramount Pictures revealed at CinemaCon that the Call of Duty movie will hit theaters on June 30, 2028. Taylor Sheridan, the creator of Yellowstone, is writing the screenplay, and Peter Berg will direct. Although filming hasn’t started yet, a preview was shown at CinemaCon with footage from the game set to The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army.”
Director Peter Berg has a history with military films, having previously made movies like The Kingdom, Battleship, and The Lone Survivor. He feels a strong connection to the special operations forces and aims to depict them realistically in the upcoming Call of Duty adaptation, envisioning a large-scale, epic story. Interestingly, Steven Spielberg also wanted to direct the film, but Activision, the company behind Call of Duty, wasn’t willing to give him full creative control.
Rob Kostich, who leads Activision and produces the Call of Duty games, praised David Ellison of Paramount Skydance, stating they would only move forward with a film adaptation if the partnership felt right. He emphasized their goal to create a realistic and emotionally resonant movie while still maintaining a grand scale. This came after Ellison unexpectedly appeared at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, despite previously telling the U.S. Senate he couldn’t attend a hearing regarding Paramount Skydance’s acquisition of Warner Bros. due to a family death.

Call of Duty is a hugely popular first-person shooter game series that first came out in 2003. The games cover conflicts from World War II to futuristic settings. With over 22 games released, the franchise had earned over $30 billion by 2023, making it the best-selling first-person shooter series ever and one of the most well-known video game franchises of all time. The latest installment, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, was released on November 14, 2025.
In August 2025, Paramount Pictures obtained the rights to make a movie based on the popular video game Call of Duty and brought in Taylor Sheridan to write the screenplay. Sheridan is known for his successful films like Sicario, Hell or High Water, and Wind River, as well as the hit TV series Yellowstone and its connected shows—Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lioness, Landman, and Marshall. His experience with action and dramatic storytelling makes him a great choice for bringing Call of Duty to the big screen.
